Pay problem parents not to breed - mayor
Pay problem parents not to breed - mayor

AN outspoken Kiwi politician has proposed a new solution to the country's child abuse problem - pay the "appalling underclass" not to breed.

Michael Laws - who stirred up controversy by calling the late Tongan King a "bloated brown slug'' - has again hit the headlines.

"That there is a group within our society who give their children no hope nor opportunity from the moment that they are born," the regional mayor wrote on the New Zealand radio website where he broadcasts as a talkback DJ.

"That these ‘parents’ are known to authorities ... and yet the authorities can only intervene after children have been harmed."

Mr Laws goes on to write: "it would be far better for this appalling underclass to be offered financial inducements not to have children, given the toxic environment that they would provide for any child in their care."

10. I'm pretty sure her father-in-law would have been an enthusiastic supporter of this idea.

2. It must be permanent and irreversible, then fine.
I'm a zero population growth advocate.

One challenge I see is in how they define "problem parents".

I'm sure others have problems with it.

3. a better solution
than this snob is suggesting... empower more women. When women have more say in their society, their careers, lives, etc., they have less babies, the socio-economic status of the famiy goes up and society does better in general.

I'm reading Hartmann's "Threshold" and he goes into detail about this. He's right!!

"let's keep the Maori from breeding."

5. he has a point. parents who have been proven 'bad' should

never be allowed to have more kids.

rather then let them get preg. and then take the child away and into foster care.

I've know two women druggies who kept getting arrested and who kept getting preg. and the babies taken away immediately. some damaged by the drugs.

one of them was was fixed after the second damaged baby was born so at least she didn't have any more.

babies deserve better then bad parents or foster care.

sometimes it would be better for them to not be born at all.

13. It's the fact that he's ascribing this behavior to an entire class of people.
That's what makes his proposal particularly appalling. He's advocating a eugenics program. Basically he's excusing it because he says that class beats their kids so they'd be better off not being born. That's beyond appalling. Abuse knows no class boundaries. And there are better ways to deal with the problem regardless.

8. Love This Plan.
Since we can't forcibly castrate the fuckers against their will, let's pay the assholes to have vasectomies or get their tubes tied. This plan would appeal to just the kind of people who are not financially, emotionally, or intellectually prepared to raise children. They'll line up for miles.

I know this sounds like sarcasm, but it's not. This world is way overcrowded, and getting worse all the time. If there's a way to stop people who aren't equipped to be parents from being parents, we should absolutely do it.

15. it's actually New Zealand (still close though)
If it were proposed here in the States, I'd like to think the proposer would still get run out of town on a rail. Nowadays though, they might get their own talk radio and/or FockSnooze show.

16. Well, where hard economic times hit desperate people, you get weird things like selling organs...
And this.

One wonders if such a policy would encourage people to come up and offer to give up fertility for a lump sum.

In a few decades or generations, if population pressures become unbearable, any number of things are possible, even here.
