Former UK ambassador: CIA sent people to be ‘raped with broken bottles’

The CIA relied on intelligence based on torture in prisons in Uzbekistan, a place where widespread torture practices include raping suspects with broken bottles and boiling them alive, says a former British ambassador to the central Asian country.

Craig Murray, the rector of the University of Dundee in Scotland and until 2004 the UK's ambassador to Uzbekistan, said the CIA not only relied on confessions gleaned through extreme torture, it sent terror war suspects to Uzbekistan as part of its extraordinary rendition program.

"I'm talking of people being raped with broken bottles," he said at a lecture late last month that was re-broadcast by the Real News Network. "I'm talking of people having their children tortured in front of them until they sign a confession. I'm talking of people being boiled alive. And the intelligence from these torture sessions was being received by the CIA, and was being passed on."

"I was absolutely stunned -- it changed my whole world view in an instant -- to be told that London knew coming from torture, that it was not illegal because our legal advisers had decided that under the United Nations convention against torture, it is not illegal to obtain or use intelligence gained from torture as long as we didn't do the torture ourselves," Murray said.

IT'S THE PIPELINE, STUPID

Murray asserts that the primary motivation for US and British military involvement in central Asia has to do with large natural gas deposits in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. As evidence, he points to the plans to build a natural gas pipeline through Afghanistan that would allow Western oil companies to avoid Russia and Iran when transporting natural gas out of the region.

Murray alleged that in the late 1990s the Uzbek ambassador to the US met with then-Texas Governor George W. Bush to discuss a pipeline for the region, and out of that meeting came agreements that would see Texas-based Enron gain the rights to Uzbekistan's natural gas deposits, while oil company Unocal worked on developing the Trans-Afghanistan pipeline.

1. Pipeline. Again.
Why the hell would we invade Afghanistan to get at Uzbekistan's natural gas? It makes no sense.

5. Look at a map
The pipeline would go from Uzbekistan, through Afghanistan, through Pakistan to the port of Karachi. Bypassing any Russian or Iranian controlled territory.

As long as we keep propping up the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan with taxpayer dollars and the blood of Ammerican troops, that pipeline is a godsend to oil/gas companies.

8. Why would we need to bypass Russia?

11. We don't. This is just some crazed conspiracy theory to try to keep us all paranoid.

9. Indeed -- look at a map.

Try this one (it's too big to post). Let's run a thousand miles of pipe over the most god awful mountains in the most politically unstable region on the planet.

And then convince Kazakhstan that they are under Russian control.

Damn.

13. Wouldn't it be quicker and easier to run the pipeline NW to the Black Sea?

2. Stealing resources.....
preparation for the cataclysm when the oil runs out. The US standard of living is sacrosanct; Cheney told us so. So the administration is burning oil and polluting the air, soil and water, ruining the orchards and killing sheep (yes, that's been witnessed too) with air strikes in order to make sure that the West can continue hogging resources.

Makes a lot of sense, no?

7. if the oil imports stop tomorrow, we'd be good for hundreds of years. So it's a failed argument.
it might not be pretty in some places in the country, but we would survive and survive better than most places. We have 300 years worth of coal in reserves. If the oil imports stop, then the anti-coal and save the mountain folks get "shut the fuck up and get out of the way". The "don't drill" folks get, "shut the fuck up and get out of the way." We would use oil only for things where it can't be replaced, natural gas for vehicles, and coal for electricity.

15. I'm pointing out what has been posited
by people who should know. The fact remains, of course, that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were a pointless flexing of muscles, and the resources were the reason for it.

It's a very, very small clique that will benefit.

4. Let's be sure to not investigate this, Holder and Obama.
Can't have any crimes of the previous administration uncovered now, can we? You higher ups have to stick together and hold on to your power and the secrets that come with it.

Fuck the American people, they just do as they're told and pay the bills. What they don't know won't hurt them. :eyes:

6. The big question is this:
Are we STILL using rendition to send prisoners to countries where this type of torture is being done??

14. Not to be rude...is it logical to accept that such long standing policies would change suddenly?
... because the ugly truth bubbled up to the mainstream surface, and therefore couldn't safely and smugly be disavowed/dismissed as a "crazy conspiracy theory," and so the New Face, of course, has to insist a 'change' has occurred while simultaneously striving to "look ahead?"
