Aside from the fact that Vermonters back marriage equality by a large margin, there is no mechanism under the law to repeal legislation via a referendum by the people.

unfortunately, in my state, the gay marriage decision came down right before a previously scheduled vote on whether to have a constitutional convention where one could make changes like, getting rid of gay marriage.

Fortunately, it was voted down overwhelmingly.

there is no loophole. And Vermonters support marriage equality by 60% to 39%. Not so long ago I talked to our state archivist, a great old hippie guy who assured me that there is no way for a referendum to occur.
