Yankees can buy World Series anytime.

(Wife's a Yankees fan, and she'll probably go to the parade whenever that happens since she's heading to NYC tomorrow)

41. Parade is tomorrow
Here's the forecast:

Tomorrow: Partly cloudy skies during the morning hours will give way to occasional showers in the afternoon. High 52F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%.

Wish I could go to see the World Champs but have to work. Good job Yankees - this NYer is thrilled.

My Angels had their shot..they blew it. I can live with that. But what I object to is comments that are down right mean, and vicious. Seriously, half of the Fans here have never stepped into New York, and never been to Yankee stadium. I have been there..(the original one.) Seriously dude...

Show me a New York Yankee baseball player who went to the Phillies dug out and flipped them off? Show me a New York Yankee that got on the TV and said the Phillies suck ass...

Not one player did that...Yankee fans do it on the forum because there is no consequences to them.. on here. If it was in a bar, they might get their face smashed in if they intimated a Phillies fan.

Only on this forum can Yankee fans (and not all of them) can behave like jerks.

A real winner, is someone who is humble..

No humble people here right??

54. So did the Phillies
They won the National League Championship on the basis of the third highest payroll in the NL, going out and getting guys like Cliff Lee, holding on to guys like Howard with huge three year contracts (for which Howard just barely avoided the biggest choke in modern WS history, though he did manage to break the strike out record!), going out and getting Ibanez from the Mariners for a $30 million 3 year contract, and let's not forget Utley's 7 year $85 million contract extension. Phillies bought their team, too, but most people are too hypocritical to mention that.

66. Thats cool
My issue with the Yankees win only is that it amplifies the problem in baseball right now. Major market teams will always have the resources to buy championships where teams without a Yankees or Red Sox payroll will not. One of the reasons I was rooting for the Twins this post season is because they were an exception to the rule.

Baseball needes to address this problem, other professional sports have done this and baseball refuses to.

69. Well it isnt about the Phillies or the Yankees or the Red Sox
or any other major market team that due to the deregulation prompted by the players association have an undue advantage to bring home championships based solely on payroll and very little else. This has been a question that many baseball fans have been asking for years. The New York Yankees win last night just puts it centerstage. It should be addressed.

I specified the NL, so I don't know why you're shouting. That was part of the point. The NL. Watching the Phillies lose after all their fans' shit-talking nonsense (esp. after Game 1) was pleasure enough. It would have been even nicer to see them lose at home, but taking two from them in front of their shattered fans was pretty sweet.

And good job to Howard for breaking that World Series record!

Given the fact that one player on your team makes more than the Pittsburgh Pirates roster COMBINED, shouldn't you have been able to manage a sweep?

Seems like pretty crappy value for the money Steinbrenner's paying.

We won last year, and threatened to repeat this year, and all for a fraction of your payroll.

Congratulations on proving that money sometimes trumps heart.

118. No, not at all
The two highest were pathetic. By YOUR own logic on the Yankees, shouldn't the Mets or Cubs have won it? If the team with the highest payroll wins, it would have been Yankees v. Mets, no?

But that's just a flaw in your accusation against the Yankees. As is clear, winning and payroll are not necessarily connected. However, if we are to connect them, it becomes clear that with the third highest, Philly obviously went out and bought as much talent as they could, and they certainly outstripped every team but the injury-plagued pathetic Mets and the disappointing Cubs in paying out to players. is Philly innocent in the payrool game? Certainly not. They buy up (Ibanez, Cliff Lee) and retain (Utley at 7yr $85 million) talent just like the Yankees. So if the Yankees bought their title, so did the Phillies.

Phillies is one of them. The Phillies spent over a million on their players. They are no farm system like the old Expos once were. They won the World Series last year and are a great team. And I love the Yanks being a fan since childhood but we bought our way there.

65. Sure they did
The logic is precisely the same. Phillies bought last year's series and this year's NL championship. They went out and got the players they needed, and they retained their talent with huge contracts. It's not a mystery to anyone but whiney Phillies fans who still think that their team is made up of scrappy underdogs or something. They bought that NL championship as sure as anything. Of course, that's the way the game works these days, and it's pretty clear that this argument only comes out when somebody's precious team loses, like yours did.

And they won't either. What's the point of backing a team that will NEVER be IN the WS? And having to listen to whiney Yankee fans that their team had to wait a whole 6 years to be IN the WS? Try waiting for 40, 50, 75 or more years to be IN the WS.

52. Basebusiness: Where all but 9 teams are out of the running by at least August.
In the end, the teams that do make it year after year are the large-market spendthrifts.

In fact, maybe we should just fold all small/mid market teams anyway. Send all great players to the Large Market Entitlement Machine and just make all sports the Boston/LA/Chicago/NY/Philadelphia/Detroit League. And the mid/small market "cow towns" can play . . .. lesser sports like AAA baseball (I mean, who are we kidding? What is Basebusiness but LA/Boston/NY and their 27 bitch farm clubs?), volleyball and curling.

That's really what the ESPN/Yahoo people and front-running fans of all large market teams want anyway.

I guess because the players are offered money to play the best they can they are evil? Maybe they should wear potato sacks and play for $1 a year. Would any of you work for $1 a year if you were one of the few talented workers in your field? I thought not, and if you say you will, well, I have a ton of salt I'll take with that.

Jealousy and hatred for a sports entity. Now I've seen it all here.

2009 payrolls

New York Yankees $ 201,449,189
New York Mets $ 149,373,987
Chicago Cubs $ 134,809,000
Boston Red Sox $ 121,745,999

Los Angeles Angels $ 113,709,000

Houston Astros $ 102,996,414
Los Angeles Dodgers $ 100,414,592
Seattle Mariners $ 98,904,166

The Yankees also pay a competitive balance tax to all of the other teams in the league, revenue sharing, for the privilege of making so much money.

I guess the other nine teams are all the good guys wearing white hats and only the Yankees are evil? So so sad

When the Yanks steal good player from your team,it's not a fun feeling. If you are really good, you are gonna wind up on the Yankees roster. If the Nationals had a payroll of $200 million, they'd start winning championships, too. This doesn't happen in other sports because of salary caps.

Maybe you need a primer on workers and management?

In any case, professional sports is as close to a labor meritocracy as you'll ever get, which the CEO racket (besides not falling into the traditional category of labor) clearly is not. You can't, on the one hand, claim that the Yankees buy up the best players, and, on the other, claim that the salaries aren't indexed to excellence. You just think that there should be a salary cap to even the playing field for owners trying to buy that labor, which is a fair enough argument, I guess, but it's not the same as saying that the market doesn't currently generate the best pay rates for that labor. You either have a 1.26 ERA or you don't. There's no faking that. If only labor was in a similar position everywhere! Then you wouldn't have wacked out CEO salaries, because labor salaries would be actually competitive. The whole progress of capital has been to deskill labor so that it cannot demand pay indexed to its own excellence. It is ironic that in the one place you see it, many many people scream that it is unfair. It's "unfair" to the capitalists because they actually have to pay close to what production is actually worth.

then again someone who compares overpaid game players to actual laborers rather than glorified entertainers may not understand what labor is.

135. the difference between CEOs and what you call labor
is that CEOs have actual market power because their talents (and experience) are unique, same as baseball players. If ARod gets sick, the Yankees aren't going to fire him and hire one of the 100 other ARods banging on the Yankees' door, because there aren't 100 other arods. Same thing with running a company. It takes a lot of experience that only a few select people have (and is easy to screw up as we all know).

With what you call labor, the workers are often replaceable with 100 other people who can do the same job at the same level, which results in very low market power for these laborers to demand things like vacation, sick time, the 40 hour work week. That's why unions are so important.

It is not that CEOs don't work for a salary and aren't labor in a true sense, it's that they don't have the absence of market power that we think of when we think of "labor."

137. There are certainly a number of reasons for that
The salary cap is a pressing question, but the answer is by no means obvious. If it was merely a question of market size, there'd be no reason why the Miami metro area can't produce a market equal to Boston, or to a split New York market for that matter. Yet all we see are empty seats, even immediately after a WS victory. Some of this has to do with tradition, to be sure, but the Marlins carry a payroll of $36 million? That's ownership taking money off the table, and a failed product in terms of attractiveness for consumers (i.e., fans). Boston and Philly both produce massive payrollswith comparable metro area populations. Why?

in the NE, not so much in Miami. So you can have a small market in a big city. In baseball it is so hard to make the playoffs that I think owners just don't see any return in a business sense as well as a baseball sense, from spending that extra $20 mil in salary. So they just don't. They spend the optimal amount of money for their situation.

That is partially why I also want a salary floor.

You ask me. The imbalance is produced in part because particular markets just aren't ready for the commodity, or simply can't support its production at a high enough level of quality.

Shows your teams' popularity, and that's at DU. I hope Obama doesn't have them at the White House. he can't afford the political hit.

141.  Fact: Yankees win when a Democrat is President, Thanks President Obama!
"Want more Yankee Octobers? Pull for Barack Obama in November" http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2008/10/31/2008-10-31_want_more_yankee_octobers_pull_for_barac.html

HAHAHA! Take that whiners! Like Derek Jeter says.."We love when people are booing us and hatin' us" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8951VCT0kU&feature=related

And we do..cause we don't give a damn!

I love how people act like no other athletes are making big salaries. Fact is the teams make a lot of money for their owners, difference is Steinbrenner isn't as cheap & is willing to spend more for his fans & our city. Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig didnt make big salaries. But today athletes all make big bucks. I'd rather have money spent on a class act like Derek Jeter, than Pedro Martinez. (Who's your daddy now Pedro?)

I can't wait till the Yankees meet President Obama at the White House! Loved watching Derek kissing Michelle & Jill at the World Series opener. It was such an honor to have both women at our stadium.

My congratulations to the Phillies for a great series! It was fun!
