"Obama is a gay rights advocate like I'm a ladies' man"
Columnist Dan Savage to Lawrence O'Donnell on Countdown at about the 0:32 mark.

His best line: "They almost went so far as to say if this passed, the schools would be holding anal sex assemblies."

3. Sorry - I mean the whole anti-gay rights thing. It makes me sick...
...and I really feel for all these people who worked hard for Obama and now feel betrayed.

*snort*

It turns out you're quoting someone else. Thank heavens.

Hey. Give Sparkly a hug and have her give one to you, too. On my behalf. It's the best I can do from here to there.

12. yes, that's the overriding issue when gay people get their rights shattered
let's make sure it all gets turned into a discussion about race.

Gotcha.

14. well I think some LGBT activists started it
after prop 8 passed.

This guy on Ed was basically blaming Obama for the loss, which I was not shocked by. Like Obama could have swooped in and beat the machine of the Catholic Church single handedly (with all the other shit he has to deal with).

The LGBT community has always hated Obama and will find any excuse to blame him for anything bad that happens to them.

As a straight person, I find this incredibly offensive.

16. I'm offended that Bill Clinton and HIllary Clinton got a pass
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 10:25 PM by CTLawGuy
while Obama is never given the benefit of the doubt, he is viciously attacked for every minor thing and blamed for everything he hasn't done fast enough and for anything that could possibly be tied to him.

I'm offended as a person who dislikes hypocrisy and double standards.

Why is it that they hate Obama because he hasn't repealed DADT or DOMA yet, but they love Bill Clinton who implemented both those policies? Where was the scrutiny of Hillary Clinton's commitment to gay rights during the primary?

Does the insinuation by this talking head that Obama is against gay rights offend you at all? I heard the anger and bitterness in his voice, as if Obama was somehow responsible for the loss in Maine. That loss hurts me as a person who believes in equal rights and as a New Englander. What also hurts is to see someone unfairly smeared.

18. "They" don't love Bill Clinton
If you actually asked us, instead of making ridiculous assumptions, you'd find that "they" have actually been quite angry with Bill Clinton for DOMA and DADT. But of course it's easier to just blow stuff out your ass, like how we all just lurve us some Billy Clinton.

Ass.

21. first I've heard of it
funny I missed the part where Hillary got constant grief because her biggest campaigner signed two of the biggest anti-gay pieces of legislation ever.

But oh no! a gospel singer who claims he was "cured" of homosexuality sings a song at three concerts, and it's the fucking scandal of the century.

Former president who signs anti-gay legislation? Eh... Gospel singer not even doing any actual campaigning with wacky views on homosexuality? ARGH!

You do the math.

22. You are clueless. Thank goodness there are a lot of straight DUers that have learned...
a thing or two from our fellow LGBT DUers (or knew these things in the first place).

How dare you minimize their concerns.

23. please explain
how thinking that homosexuality can be "cured" is exponentially worse than signing two of the worst anti gay pieces of federal legislation ever?

17. Actually there are a few gay fundraisers
that raised more money for him than all his other fundraisers combined. They have posts in his administration as a result.

To say nothing of the tens of millions of dollars raised from gay families in support of his candidacy.

I think you have a real problem with gay people.

20. I have a problem
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 10:39 PM by CTLawGuy
with the tactics of some gay activists, not with gay people themselves.

Let's talk about DOMA and DADT.

Where is the pressure on members of Congress to pass bills repealing these laws? Nowhere. There is only griping at Obama.

If he gets a bill repealing either or both of those laws, he will sign it. That in itself is huge. But he can't pass bills through congress single handedly. Why not focus on getting a bill to him? but I guess its easier to whine about what Obama hasn't accomplished, isn't it?

sorry you asked yet?

24. Gay groups have been working for YEARS
to repeal DADT and DOMA.

When DOMA gets repealed in a few months, it will be because of the DECADES of hard work of this group -

http://www.sldn.org/

A group which has been ceaselessly lobbying Congress for many years. You obviously are not very familiar with gay rights organizations nor their history of activism. I encourage you to go to the link and do a little reading. It might enlighten you.

9. He and Biden campaigned for equal rights under the law but not for marriage
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 09:46 PM by stray cat
I expect him to fight for equal legal rights. Based on a year long campaign it was clear they would neither one promote the term marriage. Marriage was going to require electing someone else - they made that quite clear, however, for some reason none of the candidates promising marriage won the election.

13. well that's not quite equal rights, now is it? why should a woman get to marry a man, but I cannot?
that's pretty unfair if you ask me, if the man wants to marry me in return? Correct?
