McConnell: Senate health debate should last 'weeks and weeks and weeks'
By Michael O'Brien - 11/04/09 05:14 PM ET

The Senate's health reform debate should take "weeks and weeks and weeks," its top Republican said Wednesday.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he preferred to see an extended debate over the Senate's health bill, including plenty of opportunities for senators to offer amendments.

"We need to have the kind of debate we always have in the Senate on matters of enormous importance," McConnell said during an appearance on Fox News. "It should go on weeks and weeks and weeks."

"We're going to need to have the opportunity to offer amendments, a lot of amendments to try to fix this monstrosity," the GOP leader added.

McConnell's remarks come after reports have been swirling that Democratic leaders in the Senate believe the debate over its health bill will extend into early 2010. It also comes amidst charges from Democrats that, for some time now, Republicans have sought to slow down key pieces of legislation, such as climate change and unemployment benefits bills, through amendments and protracted debate.

Democrats are waiting for scoring from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on the bill before committing to final legislative language in their health bill. Even after that, though, they may not yet have the 60 votes within their own caucus to proceed to a debate.

"I mean, his problem is with his own members," McConnell said of Reid's effort to assemble votes for the bill. "I mean, he knows where my side is."

1. What the hell. It's only 800 - 900 unnecessary deaths a week.
How do these people sleep at night?

3. Well, then, I think that we should send the bills for those of us who are uninsured
and our loved ones who lack insurance to the esteemed Senator. I know that all of this bullshit about waiting until 2013 just isn't on....my daughter is just one eating disorder relapse episode away from a desperate situation for her health, and destruction of her (and our) finances.

Funny how the people who are sick and dying due to no insurance are forgotten in all of this "let's wait" talk.

Just pisses me off to the point of blind rage.

4. Oh, you mean like the debate to invade Iraq?
"We need to have the kind of debate we always have in the Senate on matters of enormous importance," McConnell said during an appearance on Fox News. "It should go on weeks and weeks and weeks."

Or the big debate about the Patriot Act?

Can't they find someone to run against this asshole?

The Patriot Act? Hmmm? Not much debate on a bill many didn't even bother reading.

7. Stall - delay - debate - argue - lie - accuse - obfuscate...
Whatever it takes to prevent the Democrats from passing a bill that might help Americans, and the Democratic Party, right, McConnell?

Note to Harry Reid: Fill up the monster truck, and get everybody you can on board. Then start it up, honk the horn, tell everyone standing in the way to either get on board or get out of the way, because the truck is leaving for Nuclear Option Street.

Democrats will continue losing as long as they allow the GOP to call the shots. They should be smart enough to figure that out, but I'm really beginning to wonder how intelligent the Democrats in Congress really are.
