Redding sister and brother push Christmas carol initiative
When it comes to Christmas carols, Merry Susan Hyatt sees herself as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come to the government's Ebenezer Scrooge.

Hyatt, a substitute teacher who moved to Redding from Riverside three months ago, will begin collecting signatures this week for a ballot measure to force public schools to provide the opportunity for students to listen to or perform Christmas music.

On Monday, California Secretary of State Debra Bowen announced that Hyatt and her brother, David Joseph Hyatt, also of Redding, could begin collecting signatures for the measure.

Schools are currently allowed to offer Christmas music as long as it is used for academic purposes rather than devotional purposes and isn't used to promote a particular religious belief, according to an analysis by the California Legislative Analyst's Office.

1. Gawds. Maybe we should form a group to
sing "Plastic Jesus" during their church services.

Pig-ignorant fucking godbothering JACKASSES!

2. First change the Federal Constitution, and then get busy with the petitions.
BTW, I heard Xmas carols on MONDAY at my supermarket. I can leave Pathmark anytime I like. Public schoolchildren are compelled to be in school and can't leave when they've had enough Christmas.

4. I think it kind of depends on the carols...
I'm not sure that Silver Bells, Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman or Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer are going to indoctrinate anybody to anything...OTOH I'd have a real issue with them singing Silent Night or The First Noel in the schools incessantly.

I think we need more secular winter music...it's a depressing time and a little music makes the spirit merry.

5. "...a little music makes the spirit merry"
When we're talking about Holiday Music, I absolutely disagree with your opinion, and I doubt my words can express my aggravation adequately. All those redundant, rehashed songs fill my spirit with a dull resentment. Those annoying songs take away the joy out of the holiday season. It's noise pollution.

7. Do we need better music?
I refuse to accept or buy into any notion that takes joy out of the lives of children...even at the expense of my militant non-theism. I just don't want people to indoctrinate my children with fairy tales of invisible sky-people who care if they masturbate or love someone who is the same gender as them.

My theoretical kids will be mine and I'm going to raise them to know there is no God, that eating meat is wrong and that Republicans are factually-evil. That does not mean they can't enjoy singing about a magic snowman or flying deer...I just want them to know it's not real, just like Jesus.

9. I agree with what you are saying, for the most part.
And if your future kids actually enjoy singing those Holiday songs --secular or religious-- after their ears have been assaulted every year beginning November 1 and ending January 2, then they are lucky. Holiday music is inescapable, and so I envy those who have a high tolerance for Seasonal noise pollution.

8. Screw that
They pushed the claim that same-sex marriage HAD to be banned or "gay marriage" would be taught in the schools, and little Biff and Ashleigh would get the vapors. OMG OMG OMG it's the parent's job to teach children about THAT SORT OF THING!

Now they want to shove Christianity down children's throats in the public schools? I don't think so. Let Biff and Ashleigh learn about that at home.

12. Being that i am a liberal and don't usually agree with religion
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 08:20 PM by Sebass1271
being introduced in government buildings, i am kind of open to this one. So what, they want to sing Christmas carols to children? We have to be open to these things. Kids love that stuff anyway!. Besides, if we liked President Obama to read to children, to give a speech to our children on their first day of school and also enjoyed the fact that one school sang a song about President Obama, why can't our children enjoy Christmas songs to be sang or performed during Christmas shows at schools? I don’t see what the big deal is. If Muslim children don't like it, i am sure they won't participate, but they will listen. Besides, rarely you see Jewish, muslins and Hindus children in public schools anyway. They usually go attend their own secular or private schools.

Don't you all think yur rejection in these stupid things are going too far and could make you all look like the right wing extremists too
