2010 California Marriage Protection Act: Make Divorce Illegal
OK so this guy is one of the fringers. However this idea has amusing elements to it. Many of those who oppose gay marriage won't like anyone poking their nose into their lives and telling them what they can or cannot do. Especially those hypocrites who are constantly dumpimg their wives for the newer, younger model.

2010 California Marriage Protection Act

“A few weeks back we introduced you to John Marcotte, a writer who runs the site BadMouth.net, and is collecting signatures to get the "California Protection of Marriage Act" on the ballot. If passed this initiative would make divorce illegal in California.

John doesn't really want to ban divorce--he's making a point about gay rights, specifically that if you want to argue that gay marriage is bad for traditional marriage, you'll have to agree divorce is worse for it. His group at RescueMarriage.Org recently made the following PSA which argues that "Children of single-parent homes are repulsive and unlovable," and that "Hell is eternal, just like your marriage is supposed to be."...video at link.

2. The problem is that most people won't read the text of the act and we might get a fundie turnout
from the Eastern part of the state. They'll think it is against Gay Marriage and voila!

9. But Isn't That Part Of The Point?
A lot of people get hurt when some people are deemed not as equal as others, it ripples outward. Until the religious right is stopped from setting the agenda in this country, many people will get hurt. And you are correct in that it's not right but until all who were created equal are treated as such, nothing about any of this will ever be right.

12. I Wouldn't Worry About It. Brilliant As This Is, It Has No Chance.
Although I must tell you, in all honesty, that what happens to straight peoples marriages - even the good ones - is not exactly high on my concern list right now.

3. If fundies want to "protect marriage" they need to make it irreversible
By all means, let them protect ALL marriages, good marriages, bad marriages, abusive marraiges, financially strapped marraiges, adulterous marriages, to include their OWN marriages regardless of which category it might fall into. If it's indeed a "sacred" institution, then by God they must live with the consequences of the "til death do we part" vow, and never ever set foot in a (gasp) civil court to undo any stupid life choices.

16. Louisiana has actually offered a "Covenant Marriage" option for years!
"Picture yourself and your fiance, looking forward to your future together, full of hope and enthusiasm, eagerly awaiting filling out the forms so you can get a marriage license. If you are in Louisiana, you have one more decision to make. Will you opt for a traditional marriage or a covenant marriage?

Let's say you say "covenant" and your fiancee says "traditional". Does this mean one of you is less committed to the relationship than the other?

What's the Difference?

Well, under the "traditional" marriage, a couple is entitled to a no-fault divorce after a six-month separation.
When a couple opts for the "covenant" marriage, they agree to waive their right to the no-fault divorce. In the event that the marriage does fall apart, only adultery, abuse, abandonment or a lengthy separation will allow a divorce to take place."

http://marriage.about.com/od/covenantmarriage/a/lacovenant.htm

Here's the punchline : One might figure that Louisiana, being in the heart of the Bible Belt, would have couples rushing headlong for this option to demonstrate their commitment to each other along with their higher power! However, the facts tell a different story - barely over 1% of couples deciding to get hitched, actually go for the Covenant option!

HYPOCRITES...HEAL THYSELF!

8. Hilarious. It's time someone protected marriage from divorce rather than from itself.

13. Cool! Jesus never mentioned anything about gay folks
But he did have a few things to say about divorce:

It was said, "Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce."
But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
-- Book of Matthew

Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. -- Book of Luke

Also see: http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Family/Marriage/divorce.htm
This passage from the website above should have folks rolling in the aisles!

Jesus said that a husband and wife become ONE FLESH in the eyes of God! Jesus further stated that NO MAN had better dare tamper with someone else's marriage... What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Woe unto the fools who help break up marriages—by recommending divorce, mis-counseling the wife, and contributing to the break-up of a family. Woe unto the scum-of-the-earth lawyers, and the ruthless judges (many of whom are lesbians), and the vile government handout programs that encourage, nurture, and cause divorce. Should it be any wonder that America has the highest divorce rate in the world? Should it be any wonder that American women file for divorce at least TWICE the rate of men? Woe unto the United States of America! We are living in a cesspool society of iniquity, where rebel feminists lurk around every corner, even in our churches, just waiting for their chance to destroy another marriage. Jesus condemned divorce, and said it only occurs when someone is hardhearted enough to QUIT their marriage, be unwilling to forgive and break their wedding vows.

Damn those ruthless lesbian judges and rebel feminists responsible for the epidemic of divorce! Let's pass a law!

18. It's a great idea.
IMO, he should say he wants to ban divorce, get the fundies and their money involved.

This needs to go on the ballot.
