The 2009 war on Christmas has begun
WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 /Standard Newswire/
Catholic League president Bill Donohue notes that the 2009 war on Christmas has begun:

For almost three decades, there has been a Christmas parade in Amelia, Ohio, a village outside Cincinnati. But this year there will be none. That's because one person complained, village solicitor Laura Abrams. Her complaint: the word "Christmas." In response, the village changed the name to the "Holiday Parade," though it did not say what holiday was being celebrated. Understandably, this dishonest scheme created a furor, the result being--just to play it safe--there will be no parade.

There will be no Christmas tree this year on the Capitol lawn in Frankfort, Kentucky. The word "Christmas" was deemed offensive. Instead, there will be a "Holiday Tree." The official line is that the "Holiday Tree" is inclusive of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's, though no one has ever heard of a "Thanksgiving Tree," "Hanukkah Tree" or "New Year's Tree."

When World War II ended, a local resident from Warren, Michigan decided to erect a nativity scene on a public median; the same family has privately maintained this tradition ever since. But there won't be one this year because a lawsuit argues it is discriminatory.

4. these sickos take away rights from people, and yet bitch about there being
an effort to attack Christmas. Like most fanatics, they just create the perfect scenario for themselves to appeal to the public as being a victim, when in reality these evil fucking bigots are victimizing everyone else around them.

10. Well said
:applause: My cousin wrote on his facebook page the other day that he was upset about our Governor referring to the state Christmas Tree as a Holiday Tree and anyone who wouldn't call it a Christmas Tree should leave the country because that wasn't what this nation was founded on.

Sick, sick, sick.

16. their knowledge of christmas, christ and our constitution
is based on hollywood movies and a decaying consumerism culture. They neither know what they are talking, nor do they even know that what they claim to be is a lie they fell for. Not only does it piss me off to see people this ignorant about our country, but be so fucking certain and arrogant about things they have no clue of.

5. This is terrible -- can't the War on Xmas wait to being after Thanksgiving?
Why does it have to start right after Halloween?

9. Our War on Christmas (tm) seems to start earlier and earlier each year.
I barely have enough time to put the Halloween decorations away before we have to wage war on Christmas. Pretty soon it'll start before Labor Day. I tell you...

:hi:

about the Christmas parade.

26. Catholics aren't the only people who celebrate Christmas.
Many denominations of Protestants, Athiests, Agnostics, Pagans and even some Jews (I personally know many who celebrate the holiday). We don't all see it as a religious holiday, some of us just see it as a winter celebration or we are attached to it because of the fond memories we've had from childhood. In fact, I know more people who see it as a secular holiday (not that that was the original purpose and it can get too materialistic) than those who see it as a religious holiday.

A lot of us see it as a time to get together with family and celebrate traditions. We just call it Christmas because it would be too much of a pain in the ass to change the name.

17. I gathered that there was a concern raised by a council member about
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 02:34 PM by zbdent
being sued by the ACLU over funding a parade ...

but then, I thought, gee ... that council member probably was elected by a bunch of conservatives ...

a recent "holiday party" I attended had concerns because they were afraid the "word find" game they put together would raise "issues" with some lefties if certain words were listed (but were in the jumble) ... but it was a RWer who made the assumption ... never bothered to ask anybody if it would happen, and probably wasn't even contemplated by his co-workers ...

oh, on a side not ... nobody "bitched" about his tie around Easter ... which had three crosses on it ... I probably complimented him on his tie at the time ...

19. Move out, troops!
My guess at the real reason why the parade is cancelled is because of lack of funds and resources. Many of these religious 'perks' that tie up local government resources are getting hacked out of budgets.

21. The celebration of Christmas was considered heresy at once point
Christians (who actually understand what's going on) celebrate Advent culminating a huge service December 24th celebrating the end of Advent. As as organist, I take a rather apocalyptic view of Advent - the service tends to be full of Sturm und Drang.

Christmas Day service is practically an afterthought - I have the day off.

22. So stupid.
What a waste of time. What difference does it make if there's a parade, tree or nativity scene anyway? Unless there's a sign that says, "Believe or DIE!", I don't see what some people's problems are.
