Oh, God. so it begins. The "V" pilot is on and...
...the main "Visitor" alien just said they want to introduce Universal Health Care.

So who rewrote this pilot and what flavor of propaganda are we going to have to put up with to enjoy the remake?

What is so acceptable about those poofy haired women (who all played reptiles), is that their characters were such extreme, domineering princesses, that it works. Diana reminds me of a beauty contestant that will stop at nothing to win the contest.

13. I remember a Knight Rider movie put out in the 90s
It took place in the relatively near future. KITT, the computer that ran the car in the original series, had been mothballed. Michael was brought out of retirement and teamed with KITT again in a city where all guns had been replaced by stunners that weren't very effective. A shot of a news program had a snippet about President Quayle. The bad guys, defeated at the end, were put into suspended animation (which was implied to have been instituted by liberals and was deemed ineffective punishment), and the technician in charge mentioned something about having to defrost, "Some guy named Manson," implying a lax on crime attitude.

It sucks when they take old shows people are familiar with and inject politics into them.

I think what I was hoping for was better lizard makeup this time around, but I wasn't impressed with the changes in the plot line - and the snarky hope references.

This could be a good remake - but from what I've seen tonight, I don't hold out much *hope*. The original was pure-D camp sci fi. This one already screams melodrama.

Don't want to see a sci-fi soap opera...

26. My gut call? This will be forgotten quickly and amount to not much.
The original was, well, original (not in overall plot of an alien invasion but in how it was protrayed, esp. the miniseries format).

This is just rehashing what's already been done. Like Tom Cruise in the War of the Worlds remake. Throwing flashy CGI and fast camera edits does not equal creativity.

20. Well, according to the story thus far,
the Visitors have actually been here for decades, starting unnecessary wars, fomenting general global unrest, committing terrorist acts, wrecking economies... in other words, providing the instability necessary for a "savior" (the Visitor version of Reagan) to come riding in out of the darkness, capable of fixing everything if we will only XYZ.

If there's a negative political statement being made here, it's not pointed at us.

72. No it wasn't. I read the interview with the original creator, Kenneth Johnson.
Who also produces this show.

His original idea was what happens when fascists take over the US. Since in the early 80s, not even the Soviets had the overwhelming power to do that, he chose an alien species with a hidden agenda. NBC bought it because it had aliens and they made some money on Buck Rogers a year earlier.

52. 4 episodes to air for Nov. sweeps then nothing until March. Then rumor has it...
"There also are reports of a "creative" revamp intended to short-circuit those Obama comparisons." According to this review: http://unclebarky.com/reviews_files/930671ca39508beb5cc163b91912f4c1-747.html

So apparently there was some intent to compare the coming of the Visitors with the coming of the Obama administration. Promising Hope and Universal Health Care with the people adoring them as saviors in down-spiraling times. And of course, the Visitors are duplicitous and evil.

56. I watched the thing and don't plan on it again.
Inane acting and a plot that's not exactly original. Too many loud commercials. Reminded me why the TV is usually only on to watch movies. Pretty good HD SFX for TV though.

55. that was the worst piece of shit -- not just b/c of the politique -- it just sucked
sad to see so many decent actors having to trudge thru it. there were parts that we were laughing out loud b/c of the overwrought camera work... even the camera work was overwrought, for gods' sake.

59. Did it ever occur to any of you dipshits that sci-fi "UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE"...
is possibly truly universal, as in curing cancer or AIDS in a scientific pretense, and not what we say it is?

Geez... communists under every rock. Now, Obama haters under every rock.:eyes:

63. Do you remember the quote?
Think really hard, now. What was the exchange between the two? Wasn't it made clear that it was what was already understood as universal health care?

.. and then I'll make up my own mind. No need to join the borg collective here.

From what I've seen, they are curing anything and everything that afflicts us. Not universal coverage on insurance premiums.:eyes:

So much hard work. So much dedication and emotion in that campaign. Made me want to come and post about how we cannot abandon this fight...I just don't have it in me tonight.

94. It was great
It did a great job of reminding me how looooong the primary was. I wish they spent more time on the GE, but I assume the documentary people just didn't get the same level of access once the primaries were over. Watching the campaign works and volunteers break down after the election was called made my cry happy tears all over again.

76. And.. one of the promos had the aliens saying they wanted to "spread hope!"
considering most tv writers are coked up 20-something guys from Encino, it makes sense that they'd lack the sophistication to understand what they're doing.

Wooden acting. Lousy script. Phony situations. Shitty special effects. Terrible editing.

91. If people stopped with a mediocre first presentation,
where would the Twilight Saga be today?

I'm willing to give it a chance for old time's sake, but, those writers better sharpen up.

If people could recognize shit, we wouldn't have Twilight. And that would be a god thing.

V wasn't mediocre, it was shit.

82. I found the "hope/change" references to be innocuous.
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 11:59 PM by MilesColtrane
But, the fact that the reporter character made a point to unnecessarily reiterate the words to the effect of "You mean, Universal Health Care?" made me think that this was a case of negative product placement.

Terrible. Just terrible. The writing, directing, acting. All horrible. And the "message" was way to overt to even be taken seriously.

Disappointing to say the least.
