Police: Pair stole up to 1k bags at Ariz. airport
By AMANDA LEE MYERS, Associated Press Writer – 24 mins ago

PHOENIX – Two people suspected of stealing up to 1,000 pieces of luggage from baggage claim carousels at Phoenix's airport have been arrested by police who found heaps of the stolen bags strewn throughout their home.

There were so many suitcases that Phoenix police could only give a rough estimate of their number Tuesday as they pulled them out one by one and gathered them in the yard of Keith Wilson King and Stacy Lynne Legg-King's suburban residence.

"A piece of luggage here, a piece of luggage there, I would imagine gets stolen out of airports all the time," Phoenix police Detective James Holmes said Tuesday. "This is a livelihood. There's a lot of luggage and there's a lot of victims."

King, 61, and Legg-King, 38, were arrested Monday, and each was booked into jail on charges of theft of property and possession of stolen property. Legg-King also was arrested on suspicion of tampering with evidence. It was not immediately clear how the two are related.

Both denied requests to be interviewed, and it was unclear whether they had attorneys. ........(more)

1. Sky Harbor airport doesn't check luggage tags
before letting someone leave with a bag. It was part of a cost-cutting measure.
That worked out well for the airport, didn't it? I hope they get sued.

3. I'll bet this is going on everywhere then.
With the economy bad and no one checking bag tags, kind of makes the perfect situation for thieves.

12. Yeah, marmar is correct -- all airports stopped checking baggage tags years ago.
A friend of mine had a bass stolen.

Thankfully, it usually takes so long for the bags to make it to the carousel that you're already standing there waiting for it in plenty of time and would hopefully see your bag coming down the chute and notice if someone grabbed it.

6. I flew from LA to Miami, they didn't check luggage tags. Anybody could've stolen bags
Flew back from Miami to LA, again, no luggage tag checks.

If I check in a bag, I usually run to baggage claim when I get off the plane so that nobody can steel my bags.

7. True that. I always choose seats near the front so I can get off the bird quickly....
..... and get to the claim before the bags make it off.

15. Well a friend of mine just got nailed $15 for one checked bag on Alaska, so maybe
they could use some of that money to hire checkers? Nah, what am I thinking?

I used to work at Sea-Tac years ago (years!) and I can't remember who the baggage claim checkers worked for...
