Palin sowed confusion on Election Night, new book claims
A new book by two reporters who traveled with Sarah Palin during the 2008 election has some revealing tidbits. Sarah from Alaska, by Scott Conry and Sushannah Walshe, tells the story of how Palin insisted she was going to give a concession speech on election night, but never told any of her staff that the McCain people nixed the idea, causing great confusion. In spite of being told otherwise, she insisted to her staff, “I’m speaking. I’ve go the remarks Figure it out.” Palin finally had to be told by senior McCain adviser Mark Salter that the vice presidential nominee doing so was unprecedented.

Among other items:

– In the days after her selection as the vice presidential nominee, the McCain team was so unsure of Palin’s policy acumen that they drew up hundreds of flash cards to get the candidate “up to speed on foreign affairs and major national issues.” One of the flash cards noted that the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was Gordon Brown, the book says.

– Before her now famous speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Palin’s handlers began to rip the price tags off items in the candidate’s lavish new wardrobe, paid for by the Republican National Commitee, after Palin expressed concerns about the cost of the clothing. According to the book, a $90 pair of socks was purchased for Palin’s low-maintenance father, Chuck Heath.

– During a celebration among staffers after the vice presidential debate in St. Louis, Palin began pushing hard to start bringing up the topic of Barack Obama’s controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright on the campaign trail. She wanted badly to win the election, the authors note. “I just don’t want to go back to Alaska,” Palin said off-handedly during the gathering.

1. It started long before election night
If there ever was a King Midas of confusion, Sarah now has the crown.

pretty much illustrates her whole story

4. This is the governor of Alaska speaking.
How did Alaska let itself get taken in by that con-woman?

14. When she was running for governor
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 01:29 PM by Blue_In_AK
and up until the time she was picked for VP, she actually seemed kind of normal. And you have to remember that she followed Frank Murkowski, who at the time of the 2006 election was the most unpopular governor in the US. She promised us a clear and transparent government, and that's what people craved in the midst of the FBI investigation here and so on.

I didn't vote for her myself, but no one was more shocked than I was when she opened her mouth at the RNC convention.

Sarah used us, plain and simple. She presented herself to Alaskans as someone she was not -- bipartisan, populist -- solely for the purpose of boosting her own ambitions. She is an extraordinary con artist.

13. Once she came back here,
it was pretty obvious she didn't want to stay. I say good riddance -- I just wish she would shut up and stop trying to be relevant.

6. A gift that keeps on giving
Thank you, Mr. McCain. I suspect Mrs. Palin was surprised by the lavish expense accounts at the national political level, and I believe her that initially she was uncomfortable with such spending. But I also think she got accustomed to it fast. I also think that she got infected by the complex you often see in sports: One or two superstars carry a team, and one of the supporting cast starts thinking that the team's success is really keyed by their invaluable contribution. That is, until that supporting cast player goes somewhere else for big money, and never quite enjoys the same success as when they had Michael Jordan or Joe Montana fronting for them or Barry Bonds hitting behind them.

12. you forget the extent to which she ripped off the state of Alaska while serving.
She is a grifter and I'm surprised you'd really think she was anything else but.

18. A grifter, yes
But I don't think she quite had the scale of a national political platform in mind. There's only so much you can rip off at the state level, and I think the amounts suddenly available to her were a bit shocking. But I don't disagree that she got accustomed to thinking bigger quite quickly. Which explains why the small potatoes available in Alaska were no longer sufficient for her appetite.

8. She's the best and the worst thing for the GOP.
Her ability to enflame the teabag base is destroying the moderates in the party. Limbaugh and Gingrich have created a monster. Ha. Ha. Ha.

9. To be fair, Gingrich really didn't. He recognizes Sarah as
the dimwit she is. Limpballs is another story. He grabs onto anything he believes will advance HIM!

10. I saw Newt speak about a year ago and he praised her
tho I guess he had to since it was just before the election. But my impression was he really, really backed her, until he realized what all that entailed for rhe national GOP.

19. He backed her then because he was backing the Pub candidate
for Prez. He's really t'd off by what's going on in upstate NY right now, and blames it on Sarah.
