Dead Fly + Dare - 'A' Grade = Angry Student
Teen Shocked When Teacher's Promise Ends In "Fail"

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. (CBS13) ―

A local student says he ate a dead fly on a dare from his teacher when he was promised a good grade, but was angered when he said the teacher went back on his word.

Stephen Zeldag, a student at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, said his Algebra II teacher crushed a fly between his hands during class last month and dared any of his students to eat it.

"He said, 'If anybody eats this fly then I will give them an A on this test,'" Stephen said. He volunteered and swallowed the fly, sealing the deal with a handshake with his teacher.

"I didn't think he was joking at all," he said.

Stephen didn't get an A on his test: He got an F, with a score of nine out of 46.

"He said that I told you I'd give you an A on your test, so here's your A, but it's not going in the gradebook," Stephen said.

The teacher even wrote, "Here is your A on your test," when he returned the paper to the student.

1. LOL--My son would do this. Both eat the fly on a dare and fail his math test.
The teacher should honor his promise in the gradebook--call it "extra credit".

3. I give a big two-thumbs up to the teacher. This proves to me that Stephen is still totally
'uneducated' and taking Algebra II (sophomore?). Stephen has yet to learn to use his mind. Why didn't he ask if the A would be is grade, recorded in the gradebook? I think the teacher taught a great lesson.

8. I agree, and I'd have a big problem with an adult allowing/daring children to eat insects.
Also a big problem with a lying bastard teaching children.

7. Even if the teacher did enter it in the grade book (which he should have done),...
it's unlikely that it would have made a lick of difference in the students final grade.

If the student only got 9 out of 46 correct, chances are that all his prior and subsequent test scores
are just as poor.

9. Where to start...
1. The teacher should not be giving extra credit/fake grades for doing things that are not related to the subject matter being taught (one of my pet peeves - both as a former teacher who constantly heard "but all the other teachers give extra credit for XYZ, and as a parent).

2. The teacher should not be promising to do things he has no intention of actually doing.

3. Eating a dead fly? Did either the teacher or the student have any idea what manure pile/dead animal/etc. that fly had been walking on before being eaten?

11. A similar event happened when I was in school...
Student: but you promised me you'd pass me if I did ______
Teacher: I lied.

I hope the student considered it a good lesson at a teachable moment.

12. I'm not surprised that someone who would take the dare would get an F on the test.
But I hope they hurry up and fire the teacher.
