PHOTOS: Twin Towers' Steel Used in the New USS New York
Carrying 7.5 tons of steel cast into its bow that was salvaged from the World Trade Center towers, the USS New York, an amphibious transport dock ship, made its “homecoming” yesterday on its maiden voyage to New York, NY.

As it sailed up the Hudson River, it paused adjacent to Ground Zero where it received a solemn 21-gun salute.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6899855.ece">It joins two other ships named in tribute to the victims of 9/11.

The battleship was scheduled to be built before the September 11, 2001, attack. However, after the atrocities, the US Navy decided to incorporate recycled steel from the fallen towers and name the vessel after New York as a tribute to the victims. It is a San Antonio-class amphibious dock vessel, capable of carrying 800 marines with helicopters.

Two other US Navy ships of the same class have also been named to commemorate the September 11 attacks: USS Arlington was named to honour victims who died at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. USS Somerset commemorates the county in Pennsylvania where the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed.

The battleship continued up the Hudson River toward the George Washington Bridge to also pay tribute at the Firemen’s Memorial at 100th St.

It turned downriver to be docked at Pier 88 next to the USS Intrepid (part of the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum) for its formal commissioning this Saturday, November 7 – and will remain docked and opened for tours until Veterans’ Day on November 11.

1. I get a gigantic woody when the military rolls out all those impressive ships
and planes and MRAPs for us to see.

Two things:

1. This is not a battleship. ( You can check out wikipedia.com to find out what a battleship is. )
2. This bad boy costs only $1.2 billion dollars.

3. I'm just glad they didn't make it a destroyer or some such . . .
I'm sorry, but I would much rather see the steel used as a monument to peace rather than something that contributes to war.

I guess this is better than a destroyer or other battleship, but still . . . .

Anyway, the photography is nicely done.

6. This is off topic, but...
I really thought there had been more progress than that at ground zero.

I mean, they've been working on the new WTC 1 for almost three and a half years now.

7. let's see==the WTC was a crime scene--usually stuff at a crime scene isn't given away to be made
into other things, but it was almost like they couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

8. I'd rather have the steel intact and in its original location
Instead of having it sail by a hole in the ground

9. That ship is doomed. Jinxed. Cursed. Whatever you want to call it.
Using steel from the WTC in the construction of a warship is macabre and ghoulish. That ship's entire existence centers around a disaster and I'd bet money it will be involved in another. Whether you want to attribute it to self-fulfilling prophecy or something supernatural, the crew of that ship will suffer weird accidents and unexplained tragedy.

There can not be good Karma coming from this.. Maybe I am being superstitious or some things from my early
learnings from Shintoism are bubbling up, but this can not be good.

11. 7.5 tons? What's that, a few links of the anchor chain?
It's like the way they label cat food -- "made WITH tuna," which means they tossed some fins and eyeballs into the mix. 7.5 tons of steel on a ship that size is nothing. Besides, it's death metal.

12. I'm amazed at the nonsense posted on this thread.
Cursed metal. Of all the stupid shit... We need some better science education in this country if apparently educated adults believe such preposterous crap.

13. "USS New York is made of people!"
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 07:42 AM by Sabriel
Seriously, all Soylent Green references aside, who's the PR moran who thought this would be a good idea? No matter how you look at it, the material from that site comes with a psychic burden.

Edited to ask the question: How is this any better than taking that metal and making Franklin Mint commemorative plates and coins out of it?
