Frank Schaeffer: The Loony Right Eats Its Own
Frank Schaeffer: The Loony Right Eats Its Own
The former evangelical rightwing leader explains how the GOP became a 'paranoid cult' aiming to 'burn down our national home'
And how they still are in NY's 23rd Congressional District election...

-- Guest Blogged by Frank Schaeffer

What a weird life! In the 1970s and 80s I helped my late Evangelical-leader, Religious Right founder father as his nepotistic sidekick. We helped establish the Religious Right and send it on its merry way to doom. Now I --- a backslider former Evangelical, former Republican --- watch in amazed fascination as once again the Right I helped launch like a nasty little torpedo into the guts of the Republican Party once again explodes.

In the mid-80's, the Religious Right wanted America to fail in order to prove they were right about America's 'moral decline.' The latest out of NY-23's Congressional election shows that they're still at it...

1. Thank you for this.
I always read anything Mr Schaeffer says with great interest because of his knowledge of how these people think and that they should always be taken as serious opponents no matter how much fun some might find it to poke fun at people like Palin.

4. It is really refreshing to hear someone who is not afraid to tell the ugly truth.

Wow! Just WOW!! I would call this an epiphany on my part. Frank Schaeffer is totally correct. I just never heard it said so simply....

None of these repukes/rwingnuts ever really wanted the govt to work. Their messiah is Grover Norquist!! who so infamously said, "I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub."

Except, of course, he was not trying to support anarchy. He meant that HIS cronies and corporations should have control of the government...not the people. A government of the people, by the people and for the people is the government that Norquist meant to destroy.

"I'll take that a step further: I don't think Bush ever wanted the government to work."
