Man charged with carrying handgun outside Greensboro abortion clinic
Man charged with carrying handgun outside Greensboro abortion clinic

Staff Writer
GREENSBORO — A Greensboro man was arrested Friday on charges that he possessed a semi-automatic handgun at a demonstration outside of an abortion clinic in mid-October.

However, James Ronald Penn Jr. believes that he was within his rights and that authorities are unfairly trying to paint him in a negative light.

Penn, 26, of 933 Meadow Oak Drive, Apt. 108 , was charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a firearm at a parade or demonstration, failing to store a firearm to protect a minor, and resisting a public officer. The charges stem from an investigation that began Oct. 17.

~snip~

Court records also indicate Penn is of “high interest to the FBI because of his alignment with violent demonstrators at abortion clinics.”

Penn adamantly denies that claim.

1. nice
"According to court documents, officers recovered from his home a .40-caliber handgun, an SKS assault rifle and loaded magazines, among other items. The charge of failure to secure a weapon stemmed from a fully loaded assault rifle found on a bedroom floor with the safety not engaged, Flowers said.

Penn disputes that, saying the safety was on and the gun wasn’t where his 8-month-old daughter could reach it."

:puke:

2. Wait until somebody parks a 3,000 pound truck bomb in front of a health clinic.
Then they cannot escape the label of terrorist.

3. Yeah he can deny all he wants
He was probably preprogrammed to shoot someone. How much you want to bet NRA or some other similar group ends up setting up this wackjobs defense on the bases of the 2nd amendment.

5. thanks for posting the link. Here is a bit more I found while googling
protest
On October 17, 2009 I wrote a blog post in admiration of someone who posted a video on YouTube under the pseudonym of jrpj1983. It shows the camera operator approaching a group of abortion protesters who are being questioned by Greensboro police officers and subsequently declining to answer an officer's questions after the officer notices the camera operator with a gun on his hip. I may not have agreed with the purposes for which he was exercising them, but I do admire people who exercise their freedoms as the law allows. Indeed, the video shows the GPD officer relenting to the camera operator, getting in his patrol car and driving away, suggesting that the officer determined the camera operator to be, in fact, within the bounds of the law.

It looks like everybody involved may have been unaware, however, of a state law that prohibits bringing a dangerous weapon to a demonstration at a health care facility. The (Greensboro, NC) News & Record reports that the camera operator, now identified as James Ronald Penn Jr, has been arrested and charged with "misdemeanor counts of possession of a firearm at a parade or demonstration, failing to store a firearm to protect a minor, and resisting a public officer."
