Was CNN Host Lou Dobbs Really Shot At?

Statements by New Jersey state police are putting Dobbs' claim that he and his wife had been shot at into question.
by Isabel Macdonald

After CNN host Lou Dobbs stated this past Monday on his radio show that "my wife has now been and I have been shot at," right-wing pundits and nativist groups are rallying to his cause.

......

But were Lou Dobbs and his wife really "shot at" as he claimed?

Sergeant 1st class Stephen Jones, a NJ police spokesperson I interviewed by telephone yesterday, chuckled out loud after he heard about Dobbs' account of the gunfire incident. Jones commented that he "wouldn't classify it as very unusual." He also confirmed that there are hunters in the area, and stated that, "at this time of year hunter complaints go up."

He observed that in the ongoing police investigation sparked by Dobbs' complaint, "nothing has been determined what the intended target for this bullet was." Nor did Jones confirm whether the shots near Dobbs' house appeared to be an accident or intentional.

Another New Jersey police spokesperson, Julian Castellanos, noted that "it's a wide open area and there are hunters in the area." Castellanos explained that the bullet had hit the house in vicinity of the attic; it "hit the vinyl siding and fell to the ground" without penetrating the vinyl, he said.

While Lou Dobbs' wife, Debi Dobbs, was standing outside the house at the time of the gunfire, the bullet did not come close to her; it "struck at the apex of the house, near the roof," and thus considerably higher than a standing person, Jones observed.

Jones says he had not seen any mention of death threats in the reports about this incident. As Dobbs stated on his October 26 radio show, the CNN host had "decided not to report" "threatening phone calls" he says he has received.

1. Bullets hitting your house clearly count as getting shot at whether on purpose or not

if you get shot and it was an accident it doesn't protect you from injury! On purpose or as an accident bullets can kill you - the bullet and your body don't care about motive

5. yes, we all know accidents happen==but to hear lou tell it, the shots were being fired directly
at him and his wife. the apex of the roof getting hit is probably not the work of someone out to get him for his racist, ignorant, hate-filled views, which is what he would like us to believe.

3. I feel for him I know what it's like when bullets come close to your house
It feels like your under siege even if your not the intended target. If I was him I'd move away from the hunting area.

4. Seems to me "shot at" conveys intent
Despite what Dobbs' overheated imagination has built this into, it appears that a stray round fired by a hunter in the nearby woods struck his house. Without the force to penetrate the vinyl siding for crissakes.

Anybody who lives in the country has had this experience. I've had the "No Trespassing" signs on my fence shot full of holes by people shooting at birds on the large acreage behind my. I've never had a deer hunter shoot one of my horses but I've heard stories.

I believe Dobbs, either intentionally or out of an exaggerated sense of his own importance is trying to inflate this silly event into something to further inflame anti immigrant sentiment among the hayseeds.

11. to me, the most interesting point in the article was the fact that lou had not bothered to
report any of those threatening phone calls. one would think, with his overweaning sense of self-importance, he would have been on the phone with the police the first time it happened.

for all we know, he fired that shot himself.

6. Maybe it was one of Lou Dobbs' listeners...
shooting at the Mexican laborer Dobbs had hired to fix his roof.

7. My mom lives right on a golf course in Desert Hot Springs, CA.
Golf balls hit the screen protecting her house and her her carport almost every day. Are people really hitting those golf balls at my mom? I don't think so.
