California Constitution May be Rewritten after 130 Years
Published Oct 30, 2009 by ■ Leo Reyes

There is a possibility that the constitution of California may be rewritten after a San Francisco-based business group led a call to rewrite the state's fundamental law.
....
bizjournal.com reports:

Repair California submitted two ballot measures to the California Secretary of State for the November 2010 ballot.
Repair California is a San Francisco business group that led a call to rewrite the state's constitution

The first measure would allow voters to call for a constitutional convention.

The second measure outlines the workings of the convention, including how delegates would be picked and limits the scope of the convention to reform four areas: the budget process; the election and initiative process; restoring the balance of power between the state and local governments; and creating new systems to improve government effectiveness.

The proposal to change some provisions of the state constitution came at a time when California has been badly hit by the global economic downturn. The lingering budget shortfall under the leadership of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger continued to take its toll on government services and employment security of the people of California.
Earlier the governor came up with a number of proposals for legislation aimed at generating fresh funding for the growing budget deficit. These proposal includes among others the selling of government assets including parks, buildings, tourist landmarks and stadiums.

If the plan to rewrite the constitution of California pushes through, it will be the first time after 130 years.

1. Please remember that CA has a right to privacy and abortion rights have been more protected here
than in most places in the nation. A constitutional convention could change all that.

2. Wise to remember, the Constitutional Convention of 1789 was narrowly focused as well . . .
that is, before it met and adopted sweeping changes to its original intent. . .

4. The main change they need in California
is to get rid of, or severely scale back, the initiative process.
