(Edited for clarity.)

However, coconut is high in saturated fat, which, arguably, can increase cholesterol levels.

If you're fighting high cholesterol, coconut probably should be avoided.

I know eliminating coconut-containing candy bars was the only dietary change my husband made, and that single change brought his cholesterol under control.

(He substitutes Tootsie Rolls when his sweet tooth gets the better of him.)

Ask your doctor. This is totally anecdotal, but eliminating coconut worked for my husband.

7. Coconut is good for you.
The saturated fat in coconut oil is medium-chain, which is not stored by the body but processed for energy. If you're fighting high cholesterol, odds are you need more fruits and vegetables and fiber in your diet, because high cholesterol is a sign of inflammation in the blood vessels.

Antioxidants help reduce inflammation, which helps reduce cholesterol. And coconut and palm oil have anti-inflammatory properties.

I once heard of cholesterol-lowering drugs likened to shooting firemen who show up to put out a fire. The cholesterol is there to help repair the damage caused by the inflammation, and it then causes a buildup of plaque, leading to clots.

10. More fruits and veggies, a little willow bark........works for me.....
I avoid trans fats like the plague. I don't think they are ANY naturally-occurring fats or oils, whether plant or animal, that are a tenth as bad for you as trans fats.

And I agree that the whole inflammation thing needs a lot more looking into. Yours is the best nutshell summary of the situation I've seen to date.

It is a problem when it is combined with sugar.

13. I can't imagine that I eat enough coconut
that eliminating it from my diet would cause a huge difference in my cholesterol. Is there a lot of coconut oil in things I'm not aware of?

15. Probably.
If you read the labels, sometimes they are wishy-washy (may contain…).

Such as "May contain coconut or palm oil."

This is stated if they sometimes use one ingredient and sometimes use the other.
