Amazing Pictures, Pollution in China
October 14, 2009, the 30th annual awards ceremony of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund took place at the Asia Society in New York City. Lu Guang (卢广) from People’s Republic of China won the $30,000 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography for his documentary project “Pollution in China.”

Everything we ever bought from China has resulted in some sort of human or earth suffering. I have a feeling of overwhelming sadness that we have come to this.

4. No, this is what happens when countries enable corporations
to operate solely for the bottom line.

6. Yes - And Which Country Is The Biggest Corporation Enabler?
And by extension, which citizenry has been the biggest supporters of corporations.

9. Actually, Europe now has more megacorporations than the US
though, that could change if the dollar bounces back.

13. Yes, And Where Did There Corporate Models Come From?
And more importantly, which country fuels the demand for cheaply made goods at the expense of the environment.

18.  Chinese Capitalists/govt don't give a damn about people or the environment.
I give them more credit than you - they're doing quite nicely developing they own little model of exploitation.

19. china doesn't just export to the u.s., for one thing.
and it's THEIR country for another.

if they didn't allow companies(not just american companies produce/pollute in china) to do so, their country would be getting so despoiled. THEY are the ones that sold out their environmental future in order to build their economy. we on the other hand, sold out big parts of our economy, in part to protect OUR environment.

2. When people talk about what a great economy China has, and all the growth and wealth it's supposedly
bringing, we must remember that it's built on this. Any country can grow when it doesn't enforce -- or even have -- labor and environmental standards. There is always a cost for cheap crap, and in the case of almost anything made in China, this is what the cost is.

3. Kind of reminds me of what water ways looked like here in the states
before the EPA, only difference is there is no layer of oil on the top of the water. This is what happens when corporations don't have a government controlling them. I remember corporations answer to air pollution too, build taller smoke stacks.

16. you do realize where those pictures were taken right?
american companies wouldn't be able to pollute their country if the chinese government didn't let them.

20. not really.
things could be made in a more environmentally friendly way- but manufacturers choose to use the cheapest methods possible, to assure the highest profit margin. the average consumer in the store has no way of knowing how the item was made, and the manufacturer could have chosen to so in a reputable manner- but most don't.

15. Is it just my imagination, or is all Chinese industry run by sociopaths?
Between pollution and substituting toxins for proper ingredients in food (and even drywall) and such, it's a conclusion that seems quite plausible.

Milo Minderbinder to the nth degree...
