(CNN) -- A rising Canadian folk singer was killed by coyotes this week in a national park in Nova Scotia, a park spokesman said Thursday.

Taylor Mitchell, 19, was at the beginning of the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park on Tuesday afternoon when she was attacked, according to Chip Bird, the Parks Canada field unit superintendent for Cape Breton.

Bird said hikers saw the coyotes attacking Mitchell and called 911. She was airlifted to a hospital in Halifax, where she died about 12 hours later, he said.

2. We're on their land.
It's expected that sooner or later they're going to get pissed off.

11. Not necessarily-- coyotes have been expanding their range eastwards in the last century
All species change in abundance and distribution over time-- even humans and coyotes.

12. Nova Scotia was not part of the Coyote's natural range
The eastern woodlands were home to the Gray Wolf. The two species don't get along.

7. I know. It's, like, folk singers everywhere you turn
With such a surplus, it was only a matter of time before an animal species inevitably ate one of them.

3. re:
I suspect this means we should go ahead and exterminate them all with poison, or by having fat people shoot them from helicopters with rifles. Oh wait, they were already doing that before ...

Why don't they make a news story every time a moose gets killed by a pack of coyotes? There are a lot less moose, so it's really more important than when a person gets eaten.

5. Coyote attacks are extremely rare. Freeper attacks are much more common.
I suspect this means we should go ahead and exterminate them all with poison.

8. this is so weird.
coyotes are usually afraid of people. I hope there will be a follow up to this. Maybe rabid?

10. When we had sheep the coyotes got one or two lambs every year
Once in a great while I was able to shoot one of them, but usually I just chased them away with a starter's pistol. Or an M80.
