90. Why would it be a surprise, it has been over 3 decades of Dems shifting to the right
I mean... I don't think they can do anything more to drive the message they are not interested in liberal policies at all.

some of us liberals, are like that obsessed ex-girlfriend/boyfriend who still does not want to accept the relationship has been over, for like... 10 years. And we show up, and there is an awkward moment in which we catch the partner of our obsession in bed with some new person, and we're in such denial we think they are simply having an after work friendly chat or something.

Frankly, I blame Carter for his attempts at turning the Dems into the GOP lite. He is a wonderful ex-president, and great human being for all accounts. But as a president, and dem politician... he kind of stunk, and he left the party toothless and way too close to the right for comfort.

It is time for us liberals to move on.

9. Senator Bernie Sanders to push for single-payer vote
Sanders to push for single-payer vote

Source: Barre-Montpelier Times Argus
By Daniel Barlow, Vermont Press Bureau

October 29, 2009

MONTPELIER — U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders will likely make history this year when — for the first time ever — he brings a bill creating a national single-payer health care system to the floor of the Senate for a vote.

As a compromise on a public-option plan that would allow states to opt out gains steam in the U.S. Senate, Sanders, a Vermont independent, continues to focus his attention on a single-payer bill, although he acknowledges that there are not enough votes to pass it.
"That bill will lose," Sanders said Wednesday morning during a telephone interview. "The question, however, will be how much support it will get."
Introduced in the early spring, Sanders' American Health Security Act of 2009 would eliminate the role of private insurance companies in health care and create a public fund that would insure all residents of the United States.

Sanders said his bill would insure the 46 million Americans without coverage and could save upwards of $400 million annually by eliminating insurance overhead and medical bureaucracy.
The system would be paid for through existing sources of government health care spending along with some tax increases, which advocates say would be less than what people pay now in co-pays or out-of-pocket expenses.

Sanders' bill has received little attention in Washington political circles as this summer's health-care debate focused more on discredited fears of government death panels and the cost of a public health insurance option, which President Obama favors.

There has never been a vote on a single-payer health care system in either the U.S. Senate or the House, according to Mark Almberg, communications director for the organization Physicians for a National Health Program, a national advocacy organization that supports a single-payer system.
"We do believe that this could be the first time a single-payer bill gets a vote in Congress," said Almberg, whose organization supports Sanders' bill.

Almberg agreed that single-payer does not have the votes to pass the U.S. Congress. He said there are about 80 co-sponsors of a similar House bill, but would not hazard a guess as to how many votes for such a plan there are in the Senate.
Knowing that his single-payer bill is likely to fail, Sanders said he also plans to try including a provision in the final health-care bill that would allow states such as Vermont to experiment with a single-payer system on a state level.

.....

Senator Bernie Sanders, Representatives Kucinich and Weiner, we salute you.

Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 10:18 PM by tnlefty
I thought that Sen. Sanders push was to be coupled with Rep. Kucinich's amendment in the house bill (changing ERISA), and Rep. Kucinich's amendment was stripped from the house bill today.

Can Sen. Sanders' amendment stand on its' own without a counterpart in the house bill?

ETA: Brunch with Bernie is on Hatrmann's show tomorrow, but I can't listen to anything that Sen. Sanders might say about this until 3 p.m. EST.

The counterpart to Sanders' nationwide single-payer legislation is Rep. Weiner's HR 676.

Unfortunately, the Kucinich amendment has now been stripped out of the House bill. That leaves Weiner's amendment HR 676 still viable. It will receive a full vote on the floor.

The Weiner Amendment would substitute H.R. 676 for H.R. 3200. H.R. 676 would institute a single payer health care system to cover all Americans. Health care providers would remain private but would be reimbursed by the government for care provided to participants.

Do it. Thanks.

Dear xxxxx

Congressman Wiener needs your help on his single payer Medicare For All amendment. I just got back from a conference in Boston where Rep. Wiener asked for help on two things:

First, and urgently, he wants people to contact Speaker Pelosi and ask her to keep her promise to allow a floor amendment and floor debate on a single payer amendment to the House bill. Although the Speaker promised such a floor amendment in July , there is a strong likelihood that she will back down on that promise in the very near future unless she gets a flood of emails, faxes or calls. So let's flood Nancy Pelosi's office with faxes like we did once before.

http://www.1payer.net/faxapp/senders/add/cid:40

Remarkably, Speaker Pelosi said in Democratic Caucus "If it were up to me, we would have single payer." Let's remind Nancy Pelosi with a flood of faxes: it IS up to her because she is the Speaker.

Second, Rep. Wiener asked that we flood our Congresspersons with calls and push them to support the single payer Medicare For All amendment. About 100 other Congressmen are solidly behind it now and even blue dogs are wavering, so Wiener thinks a push on Congress will help a great deal. You can send a fax supporting the Wiener single payer Medicare For All amendment right now. Just click here.

You can send a FREE fax to Pelosi very simply and easily.

Here is the link to the fax.

It simply asks Pelosi to keep her promise for a floor debate in the House. The Pelosi fax linked above is very important. You can also call her office at

202-225-4965.

Don't let her back down on her promise of a single payer floor debate in the House.

Urge your rep to vote 'Yes' for single payer!

This fall presents a historic opportunity for members of Congress to go on the record in support of single-payer legislation.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) is introducing a substitute amendment to the House leadership’s bill, H.R. 3200, that would delete the language of that bill and substitute the provisions of H.R. 676, the single-payer, Medicare-for-All bill sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has promised a full floor vote on Weiner’s amendment in the weeks or months ahead.

The Weiner amendment, unlike the House leadership’s bill, assures universal, comprehensive, and high-quality coverage, free choice of doctor and hospital, and no co-pays or deductibles through a publicly financed system similar to Medicare. Because of the massive savings on private insurance overhead and paperwork, the Weiner amendment would entail no increase in U.S. health spending, in contrast to the House bill’s $1 trillion price tag over 10 years.

Write your representative today in support of the Weiner amendment. If you can, arrange a meeting with your congressperson; you can find tips on how to do so here and talking points here. Finally, please write to Rep. Weiner so he knows that he has our support in his fight for real health reform.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) successfully offered an amendment to the House leadership’s bill that, if incorporated into final legislation passed by the Congress and signed by the president, would allow states to adopt their own single-payer system if they chose to do so. Specifically, Kucinich’s amendment would waive certain ERISA provisions that could be used to obstruct such a move.

While PNHP works for a national single-payer program, and while we more specifically supports the passage of H.R. 676, we welcome any efforts to move toward single payer. We therefore encourage you to write your representative today in support of the Kucinich amendment.

39. The Democrats have seriously underestimated the desire of their base for a
single payer plan. They failed during the Clinton era and they're failing now. And if they have any hopes of maintaining a majority they better get their act together. It's now or never. If they don't pass it this time I will lose any faith I still have left in them. If that happens the next time they try to make a campaign promise on anything I will just laugh in their face.

Let's have the explosion of anger from the American people at this phony wuss Obama, and force them all to do what the people want: health care, not "options" and "triggers" and "exchanges" and corporate control of the Government and political system. Sanders was the only one on the Senate (that I recall) who warned specifically against the disaster of the Wall St. bailout and corporate executive bonus bonanza, and is the only one in the Senate on this; the House is a lot better, (and the almost-never-praised Nancy Pelosi actually appears to be one of the good ones there, as Repr. Anthony Weiner just said again last night on Rachel Maddow).

The point is NOT to give an "alternative, " "choice," "competition" "to keep commercial prices down"--it is NOT about another commercial industry being at the center of all political consideration at all! It is about saving the American people from this horrific oppression that they can't stand anymore. If commercial insurance goes bankrupt and all dies from this--let it!

76. Hell Yes! Tell President Obama to Start From Scratch - Single-Payer
not matter what it is called, such as Medicare for All, is the only option. Let's get in the 21st century. Let's get the insurance and Big Pharma blood-suckers out of the way and not in between Americans and our need for medical treatment. Let's end the "death panels" that are the Boards of Directors of the Medical Insurance Corporation who decide every day who will get insurance and who won't condeming thoses who can't afford insurance, don't have employer supported health insurance, or who have lost a job, or not given any insurance who have insurance corporations delcared, so called "pre-existing" conditions which they define as pregnancy, rape, domestic abuse, children overwieght or underweight, or people who have taken anti-Aids drugs. This blight on our country must be abolished, it is evil and must be stopped! Go Bernie!

I am under no fantasy about this corporate-bought Congress and President will adopt Single-Payer or Medicare for all. But, we must continue to push hard for it on all fronts! It truly is the civil rights struggle of our time!

91. I sure hope so. It's hard enough to be sick without also having to deal with the fact
that your life isn't worth much at all in the current system. We may have the "best treatment in the world", a'la television shows like House, and now Brothers and Sisters, but what a very different reality lands in your face if you or a loved one is uninsured when such a diagnosis comes down. What do you do? Kill yourself right then and there so your family doesn't lose their home?
