Sarah Palin emailed a statement today following claims by Levi Johnston on the CBS "Early Show" that he's keeping some unspecified "huge" things about Sarah Palin from the public.

Johnston also said on the show that Palin joked about her son Trig, calling him her "retarded baby."

Here's the statement Palin released through her spokeswoman, Meg Stapleton:

"We have purposefully ignored the mean spirited, malicious and untrue attacks on our family. We, like many, are appalled at the inflammatory statements being made or implied. Trig is our 'blessed little angel' who knows it and is lovingly called that every day of his life. Even the thought that anyone would refer to Trig by any disparaging name is sickening and sad. CBS should be ashamed for continually providing a forum to propagate lies. Consider the source of the most recent attention-getting lies - those who would sell their body for money reflect a desperate need for attention and are likely to say and do anything for even more attention."

I've known many a mother of a disabled child refer to their kids in that way... don't get me wrong! They don't really mean harm by it... it's a coping mechanism.

My best friend had a little girl with multiple birth defects... the poor kid could only react by smiling or crying... and when we talked stupid, she really got off on it and cracked up. The more we mimicked her, the more she laughed. So we went with it. Baby Jenny became our "sweet tard"... we jibber jabbered her to the "tard bus"... when we laughed, it was harder to cry. And if we cried, it was impossible to care for Jenny. She lived to be 11 after doctors said she'd never reach her second birthday. We attribute her longevity to laughter. The other parents and care-givers at Jenny's school contributed to the laughter too... no harm was meant by it. But if you were to experience the pain of this situation, you might understand too.

I don't blame Sarah if she did do this... I get it.

Her family treated her much the way you describe. At first I was horrified, but when my roommate explained the rationale to me, I understood, even if I could never bring myself to "join in".
