Washington State vs. S. Carolina For Boeing 787
Why does this issue seem to be flying so far below the radar?

Details of Boeing-IAM talks show big gap, as S.C. ready to sweeten deal

Boeing's board met Monday without reaching a decision on a second 787 production line, as details emerged on the bargaining positions of Boeing and the Machinists. In South Carolina, lawmakers prepared to sweeten the deal, but an attempt to impeach Gov. Mark Sanford might get in the way.

Anyone familiar with what is going on? Is Boeing bailing out of Washington state??

2. I thing SC is a "right-to-work" state
-- that is, anti-union. Might be a way to to stick it to the IAM.

3. Boeing picks South Carolina for 787 line
Boeing will start a second production line for the 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston, adjacent to the company's existing facilities, Gov. Mark Sanford and legislative leaders announced this afternoon.

Within five years that investment could total 3,800 jobs and $750 million in investment, according to incentives approved this week by the Legislature.

7. wow, thank you
for your quick reply with the link. Looks like the die has now been cast. I don't see this as good news for the Seattle / Everett area nor the IAM. Looks like Boeing has found a way to end run the union.

4. From what I hear
This is about the second Assembly line for the 787 (the first will still be in Everett, but gives Boeing a bit of leverage over the Unions).

Bottom line: Boeing wants some union bargaining to 'keep' the second line in WA state. Not that it will happen, but they just want to get a deal from the unions.

The first line will probably not move, though. unless the machinists go out on strike.

6. I have a friend who just took early retirement rather than work there anymore
His take on it is that the McDonnell-Douglas people are running it according to their agenda now - which is cheap, skinflint to the bone, and really stripping away the heart and soul of the company.

10. looks like his
opinion has merit:

Take away the heat, all the union-bashing or management second-guessing as Boeing now appears ready to move a major piece of its plane-building operations to South Carolina. At the core of this breakup drama is a cold statistic: 14.

As in $14. Per hour.

That's the average pay of the local line workers who are building the fuselage of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner in a Charleston, S.C., plant.

Average pay of a Boeing Machinist around here? $28 an hour. Now, these pay averages aren't directly comparable, say people in the know. Many of Boeing's workers in South Carolina are younger or less experienced (the plant is only 4 years old). So the average pay there tilts lower.

Still, the average pay at Costco stores around Seattle is $17 an hour. According to PayScale, a Seattle company that tracks wages, the average for a hairstylist in Seattle is $18.24 an hour.

11. Boeing 787 Highlights $600 Million...
...in Contracts with Chinese Suppliers

BEIJING, June 02, 2005 -- Boeing today announced agreements with Chinese suppliers worth an estimated US$600 million for production of commercial airplane parts and components, including the first firm contract with such suppliers to build parts for the all-new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

12. You are supposed to look on the bright side.
At least they picked South Carolina over China for this new assembly line.
