75. Oh Noes!!!! You're Gonna Bring Me To Tears By Throwing My Wife's Death In My Face!!!
Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 07:07 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
I mean, it's not like I haven't felt the impact of it every day of my life since or anything, so your reminder just TOTALLY refreshed my mind to a tragedy that up until right now, upon seeing your little dumbass comment, I had all but COMPLETELY forgotten about! But man, now that I read it, I just can't avoid remembering that oh my god! My wife died! That's right!

(And really... A completely irrelevant vegetarian thread and yet that's all it takes for you to stoop so low as to use the epitome of personal tragedy to try and tear someone apart by throwing their spouses DEATH in their face? Any idea how much of an absolute piece of shit that makes you look like?)

Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 03:29 PM by ET Awful
What does needing protein have to do with it?

Tempeh, tofu, wheat gluten, TVP, all very high in protein. Needing protein has little to no bearing on whether someone should be vegan, vegetarian or omniverous.

30. Which is nice...........
.....if one isn't allergic to soy.

However, soy allergies are one of the top eight food allergies out there. Not to mention people with Celiac disease who can't handle wheat gluten.

Furthermore, there are people, (myself for one), who simply cannot digest most forms of non-animal proteins. Animal and fungus protein is about it for me.

So what are our options?

I didn't criticize anyone who eats animals BTW, what I pointed out was that "I need protein" does NOT exclude a non-animal diet.

within your ability. If you can't eat "X" don't eat "X"

If any vegetarian gets aggressive with you over that, suggest they've been sneaking too many hamburgers and need to veg out for a month to get back on the relax track :)

61. It's certainly do-able.
A former coworker of mine is vegan, has celiac and is allergic to soy. I'm pretty sure she's not lacking in anything either, because her degree is in nutrition.

Best bet, when one has multiple challenges like that, (whether vegan or not) is to consult a qualified dietitian.

85. There's nothing wrong with beans and nuts, but soy has estrogen in it.
This is why soy-based products may be good sources of protein for women, but not for men. I'm assuming that "tempeh" as well as tofu is soy-based.

70. You'll get healthier, leaner sources of protein if you give up the meat...
Egg is the most complete protein available. Milk and cottage cheese are complete proteins. Beans + bread would be too. Vegetarians and vegans are healthier than most meat eaters. And innocent animals don't have to die just so that you can have fun eating burgers.

29. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis
my doc suggested that I get off sugar, caffeine, white bread, dairy, and red meat.

I don't really like red meat, and I've always had a hard time eating flesh. Any flesh. (I worked in a meat packing plant back in the day and it has scared me to some extent).

I've had a hard time giving up sugar, dairy, and caffeine. Everything else has been kinda easy.

The more fruit, veggies, and water I drink, the better I feel. The less pain I have..

Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 03:26 PM by ET Awful
I do eat cheese regularly, and eggs once in a while.

However, the eggs and cheese come only from sources I know. For instance, we have a friend who has chickens, we only get eggs from her and one or two local family farmstand type places. The cheese I only get from small farms who raise their own cows, etc.

Yes, I do feel a bit guilty about the cheese once in a while because no matter how you look at it, buying dairy contributes to the veal industry in the long run.

I do NOT eat beef, chicken, pork, etc . . . basically the only "flesh" I eat is fish.

Don't really know how to deal with vegetables. The non-meat part of my diet is mostly grain. Pasta, bread, rice.

Ultimately I would like to eat no meat, but still eggs and dairy products from responsible farmers. It's not high on my priority list though. I just choose from what I have at hand.

56. I'm definitely a shade of gray
I'm an omnivore, but eat less meat than I used to. I have a nice stock of vegetarian/vegan prepared food options in my freezer from Morningstar Farms (I love the BBQ Riblets, it's like a McRib sandwich without the cackling clown) and Field Roast, along with plenty of fresh veggies, beans, rice, pasta and other goodies.

That said, tonight it's a very un-veggie Quiche Lorraine.

57. totally cannot eat beef anymore
after seeing a beautiful little beef bull at a county fair three years ago.

and I had just eaten a cheeseburger minutes before... :(

I do eat chicken, turkey and pork but am getting turned off of pork lately, also.

I prefer sea food to meat anyway.

Oh, and beans....lots and lots of beans...

um...and birthday cake. Is that vegetarian? :7

58. I eat a very balance diet...
Two dairy servings, two fruit, three veggie, one or two servings of whole grains, and one or two small portions of meat a day.

This after extensive research and much guidance from several nutritionists.

I tried going pure veg and I seriously hurt myself... not on my own, mind you, but under the guidance of several nutritionists and my doctor. I ate exactly the correct portions of whole grains and legumes, and still my hair fell out, I suffered severe migraines, my skin and teeth went to hell.

I'm all better now, thank you.

64. I eat food from local farms and seasonally.
I eat mostly vegetables, fish, poultry, a little beef and lamb: all locally produced, free range, hormone-free, etc. I was vegetarian then vegan for 10+ years, but am healthier on my current diet. Everyone's body is different, some people thrive on the vegetarian diet, others don't, despite advice from true believers to 'consult a dietician'.

There is rarely any intelligent discussion around the real problems of farming methods that destroy entire ecosystems to produce monocrops like soy, wheat, and corn, and the horrors of factory farming. Everyone's dietary choices have impact on the environment. Unless you grow your own vegetables, soy, corn, etc., or live in a place where these crops are grown locally, you're part of the problem.

72. Lacto-Ovo-Pisco (sort of/mostly)
One of my teenage kids went Lacto-Ovo-Pisco for Lent this past spring and 'hasn't gone back'. Sooooo, in order to make meals that will satisfy the family we're ALL pretty much Lacto-Ovo-Pisco. On occasion, myself or the other family members will have a steak or some bacon or sausage. Additionally, there is just no substitute for a chicken broth or chicken soup in some instances. Vegetable broth just doesn't have the depth of flavor that a chicken broth does. No more lunch meat - cheese, veggies, fruit, bread, hummus, etc. in our lunches. Overall, our meat consumption is waaaaaaaaay down from just a year ago. I consider that pretty good progress.

74. My wife and I felt is was more beneficial...
...to eat FRESH food that contains no pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, fillers, artificial flavoring, high fructose corn syrup, packaging contaminents, or other "inert" ingredients.

We moved to The Woods in 2006 and started growing our own after discovering that vendors at the Farmers Markets will frequently use even more pesticides, herbicides, and chem fertilizers than a commercial farmer, especially if their small crop is threatened.
Some will then tell you to your face, "Sure. Everything her is "organic" (whatever that means to them).

We also keep pastured chickens for eggs.
We avoid "packaged" foods as much as possible, buy in bulk and cook from scratch.

Our diet has naturally shifted away from meats to veggies, grains, fruits, and berries, but we aren't religious.
We occasionally sin .
What would life be without some occasional New Orleans SeaFood, Memphis BBQ, REAL Mexican, Classic Italian, or Chinese?

I almost NEVER respond to threads about vegetarianism because they usually end up like this:

87. I don't eat red meat
but that's less about high-mindedness and more about learning how it disagrees with me. I never much cared for it, anyway.

I like fish and shellfish and poultry, though. Even there, those are likely to be a part of my daily diet 1-3 times a week.

Don't try to pry the cheese and milk from my hands, though!

88. I'm an omnivore but could probably give up red meat if it wasn't for the need
for a steak. Still, I scoff at the notion of giving up fish and poultry, that's stuff I'm willing to kill myself if need be but the beef is a bit of a heartstring jerker for me and seems like a cousin of cannibalism to me.

If I could only have one of the two, and were forced to choose, gimme some meat!
