ACORN pleads not guilty in Nevada
ACORN pleads not guilty in Nevada

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- ACORN and its former deputy regional director have entered not guilty pleas to charges of violating Nevada's voter-registration laws.

Amy Busefink, 27, appeared in court Tuesday, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now has been under fire for its voter-registration practices, resulting in criminal organizations in several states. In Nevada, Christopher Edwards, the organization's Las Vegas field director, pleaded guilty to paying voter registration workers a bonus for gathering more than 20 signatures a day violating a state ban on tying compensation to numbers of registrations.

Edwards agreed to cooperate with investigators in return for a probationary sentence.

ACORN leaders say the plan was entirely worked out by Edwards and Busefink was not involved. Prosecutors say she signed off on the plan, supposedly called "21-plus" or "blackjack."
