The Big Screw You
I have been thinking about the to and fro on the opt out.

I believe there is a group of people who are actually glad the 'opt out' provision is in the bill Reid proposed.

They think it is the big 'screw you' to the red states in entirety.
Screw you to the politicians.
Screw you to those who voted for them.
Screw you to people who are progressive, but haven't made enough progress yet to make a blue state.
Screw you to the people who have worked as hard as they could for years for the Democratic Party.
Screw you if you can't or won't move to a state that won't opt out.
Screw you for whatever else.

I understand realpolitik. I understand inch by inch. I don't agree with it or like it, but I understand it.

I also understand 'Screw you.' You know who you are.

1. Maybe, but that's not how I see it.
I am as much against "punishing" red-state residents as you. My state used to be one.

But my belief is this: Without a public option, the red states will eventually be pressured into becoming blue states, and not just by their blue residents, but by their red ones.

Those who thought they did not want it will see how the public option works in the blue states, and they will say "I want me some of that. It isn't the terrible thing I thought it was." And they will then do what it takes to get it. Including throwing the bums out. Finally.

And then EVERYBODY will have the option.

It's not about "screw you" or punishment (although I do agree that it sucks that they should even have to wait this long). It's about showing the people who think the public option's such a terrible thing "Look! It's not as bad as you thought it was! Don't you wish you had it now?" And goad them into taking the steps they need to take to get it.

3. Well then they shouldn't be shocked when the red staters say
"Screw you" to the Democratic Party. Why should I work my ass off for a party that doesn't give a shit about me?
