I received a fairly sizable check today and went to the bank on which it was written to cash it.
The bank said they wanted a fee to cash the check. I said I wasn't paying it. They refused to cash it. Yes, I know this is a standard practice but I was sick of their nickle and diming today and refused to participate in it.
I eventually did get the check cashed without paying the fee but in the course of the discussion I said, "You banks make me sick. I am fed up with you and so are most other Americans. You took our tax dollars and then you turned right around and refused to lend it to people for such necessary things as mortgages." I finished my tirade by saying, "You banks suck."
I know, I know, as an English teacher my description could have been way more linguistically sophisticated, but it just wasn't.
I quoted a statistic that said banks refused something like two-thirds of mortgage applications in the last six months.
The banker nodded and said that he'd applied to his own bank for a mortgage and had gotten turned down. He had to go to a mortgage broker to get his refinance.
Then he said, "Yeah, we suck."
I burst out laughing and so did he. We had connected on a human level. :)
