3. Perfect time to remind people to keep your black cats indoors this week!
There are some sick people who want to do cruel things to black cats this time of year.

My brother's black cat vanished the day before Halloween never to be seen again, a couple of years ago.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but it is a related topic.

Edited on Mon Oct-26-09 10:20 PM by barb162
Actually mine are so afraid when they hear the kids on Halloween, they run to the closets and hide.

I bet your brother's cat was so frightened he ran really far and couldn't find his way back. A very sad story.

9. No, black cats really are sought out for rituals this time of year.
My brother kept hoping the cat would come home, but he never did. If he was going to run off, he would have done it on July 4th.

Most black cats make it through October without meeting foul play, but, there are just enough sick fucks out there, to be concerned over their safety.

15. You are so correct
When I adopted my black domestic shorthair "Karma Kitty" from the ASPCA 11 years ago I had to sign a form that specifically related to black cat abuse/torture/killings at halloween time. There sure are some sick people in this world to pick on the most defenseless of creatures.

Also, our local shelter won't let people adopt black cats this time of year. If they really want the cat, they have to come back well into November.

I'm so sorry about your brother's cat.

I have a tuxedo cat and a black cat with a small patch of white between his back legs. He's Smokey, the tux is Butters. Butters has two 2 week old babies she's caring for now - they live in our shed. I never thought about Smokey's welfare around this time of year - I'll bring him in just in case for the next few nights.

She would hide in the bushes and wait for one of the neighbor ladies to walk their little yap yap dogs by. Then she'd run at them and give them a heart attack. lol. I saw her challenge a full grown raccoon once. Her name was Riggs, named after the Mel Gibson character in Lethal Weapon. She lived up to the name.

Which he does for fun. He's a very, very strong cat but uses his strength a fur-dozer to get my attention when he's not being petted enough. He's very shy, but will overlook that to be groomed, by anyone anytime.

Edited on Tue Oct-27-09 06:53 PM by DireStrike
Rogue has some extremely dark brown fur, as most black cats do. Not many are purely black. And yeah, Rogue is very hard to find when a stranger comes.

Here he is, taking up two seats and daring anyone to try for one of them:

Oh my. That picture posted way too big. Lets try again.

I got her right before Halloween in 2003. The lady that gave her to me (already had ten cats and couldn't take another one in) found her sitting in the middle of the road ans was afraid she would be run over.

Onyx has been my little sweetheart ever since.

53. And IIRC black cats are far more likely to go unadopted because of superstition
so it's better to check out potential owners rather than just lock them away as a precaution this time of year.

If I had an outdoor black cat I'd lock it away near Halloween just because around here there are plenty of knucklehead teens who TP trees and play mailbox baseball, and "borrowing" a black cat for a costume or party wouldn't surprise me.

I've decided that my next cat will be a black one, if for no other reason than its fur will blend in with my clothing.

The tuxedo I went out and found.
The 2 black ones found us.
What a difference in temperament.
The Tux is loving and purry, the 2 black ones are all legs and tail and independent, and they stomp when they walk, very assertive.
I sweat there is Siamese in the short hair black ones. They like to climb, they use their front feet a lot for poking and smacking things off the tables.
And they always seem to have a teeny bit of white on their chest.

We found Kramer as a kitten in the neighbor's yard. To this day we don't know what happened to his mother or the rest of the litter.

He's a real sweetheart. I joke that he is more of a dog than a cat because he clings to me. Unfortunately he's getting up there in years and I'm going to be heartbroken when he's gone.

SHe was found in a car engine at 1 month old, and we adopted her at 2 mos... that was about 3 weeks ago!

She is already fluffier and healthier since she has love and a house to romp in... and she 'headbutts" when she's loving on you. Her nickname when she's being frisky is 'black lightning' cuz she is so fast...like a moving shadow!

Almost all of our cats have been tan/black tabbies...so this is a new one for us. I love her pretty face and her black nose :D

45. Snopes is actually inconclusive on whether black cats are really in greater danger this time of year
as seen here:

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/blackcat.asp

but that doesn't mean keeping your animals in on Halloween is a bad idea. It just means that while there's very widespread popular belief that black cats are being napped for satanic rituals at this time of year, there's very little proof to back it up. And every time an animal disappears this time of year, people assume it was kidnapped by others up to no good.

They are elegant, intelligent, and loyal.

Our late, great kitty Hobbes, who we lost this past year, age 18. He was an awesome kitty.

And our current feral rescue, Thomas, aka 'Chubbs', is the little black guy we kept out of this litter. My son just couldn't let him go after losing his beloved Hobbes.

He is so happy to be here, and has become my son's shadow. All the other kitties got forever homes.

66. Every black cat I've ever known has been paranoid, wary, and jumpy.
I wonder if this is a relic of their being hunted and killed by superstitious humans. Mostly the skittish and skeptical cats survived.

69. I had a black cat who sat on her haunches and ate out of her hands.
It was the craziest thing I'd ever seen and gave me a smile at every dinner time!

72. Kickin' for the kitties -- especially the beautiful black ones!

And remember, without cats life has no meaning. :D
