How Do I Hate facebook? Let Me Count the Ways:
Edited on Sat Oct-24-09 09:29 AM by proud2BlibKansan
1. It's not visually appealing. I like color. FB is bland and unappealing. I don't like Daily Kos for this same reason.

2. I can never find what I want to find. I just saw where someone supposedly mentioned me in a wall post and I looked for way too long to see what this person had said. Never found it. But I now know everything this person has done in the last 6 months and what her political beliefs are. I already knew her political beliefs and I don't give a rat's ass what she did last weekend.

3. Emails! Grrrr!! I generally complain about people who complain about emails. That 'Delete' button is just too convenient. But I am now getting so many FB emails I am joining the email whiners.

4. Generally I like making friends online. I have several very good friends I met online. But FB tells me I have 100s of 'friends', most of whom I know only from their name on FB. I got a friend request this week from someone who said they were friending me because I was friends with someone he really likes but I don't even know that person. How can I make sure these FB friends are not serial killers or child molesters?

5. That damn poll about killing Obama. I was 'fortunate' enough to find it early before it was removed and the first comment under it was dated a month before it was removed. FB claims it removed the poll right away. But it was there for a month. That's not right away.

1. How does one "five a rat's ass" anyway, and why would you?
I've seen this phrase a few times on the internets and can't figure it out ... I must've missed some cultural education somewhere. Is it anything like a "high five"? ugh ...

(okay just kidding. ;) like I never ever make a typo. )

72. I joined so I could see my daughter's photos. Since I joined, a few old friends that
I had lost track of have reconnected with me. But although I do have a FB account, I never actually use it. I just go and look whenever my daughtr posts a new set of photos.

I have to admit, though, that since I use it so seldom (just when she posts pics), I have trouble remembering my sign-in and my password!

Edited on Sat Oct-24-09 09:29 AM by liberalmuse
Your boss WILL find out. That's all I'm going to say about that. I've pared my Facebook down to family, a few close friends and a couple of DUers. I'm only on it to get updates from my daughter in New Zealand. She does not have a phone, and while she does email, I like to see her pics.

12. You can stop the e-mail
On the top blue bar, click on "Settings." Then hit the "Notifications" tab. Uncheck everything under the e-mail column where you don't want to receive e-mails.

You can ignore "friend" requests. If you don't want them as friends, don't hit the button that says "add." The "You have 100s of friends" thing is crap. Just don't click on it. Don't click on anything you aren't sure of.

I know what you mean about Facebook. I'm only on it to keep in touch with a few people. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother with it. It can be a huge time-waster, and all of the games and garbage they shove on you are really annoying.

18. I got 100s of friends when I first joined
Had no idea it would lead to 100s of people I don't know. I had just gotten home from Camp Casey and we had agreed to connect on FB.

I hate to turn off the emails because I get about one a week from someone I want to hear from. Usually I email them and ask them to just email me instead of posting a message on FB. But one activist I know said it's easier for him to connect on FB. So I keep getting the emails.

24. You don't have to turn off all the e-mails....
You can leave the e-mails that notify when someone posted to your wall, and just turn off what you don't want, such as whenever someone tags you in a post, or whatever. The only thing I let them send me e-mails on is the weekly birthday notification.

You can "unfriend" people, too. Just go under your friends list and hit the "X". It's possible you got onto a network, which might explain all of those people you don't know. Chances are, if you end the connections, none of them will even notice anyway. I swear, some people "friend" people as if they're in some sort of contest to see who has the most "friends." It's like a popularity contest for some people.

14. You can set it so that you don't get any emails.
If you mean the notices that somebody has posted a comment or something.

My gripe is that I post something that I think is really interesting and then: crickets. Nobody "likes" it or comments. Makes me think I'm weird or something. I think it's more like laziness. People are in passive mode, reading stuff and can't be bothered to give feedback.

Grip #2: those infernal quizes everyone takes and posts. I really don't care what "Brady Bunch character you are"!

19. I Filter The Thing...
I've had fun with Facebook...reconnecting with people going back to nursery school and, for the most part, they're people who I was friendly with along life's long road and here is a touchstone. I call it the "twilight zone" at it's like a quick look one at one's life.

As one whose played online for too many years (back to BBS's in the early 90s) I've seen these social networks come and go...having its moment and then something else comes along. But I've also learned to control the social not visa versa. Thus I limit the number of people I am "friends" with. Those who I "friend" are people I genuinely want to communicate with...and never solicit for them. Those who "friend" me are put in two catagories...those who I know and those I don't. Then I set them into one of several groups I've set up that let me see who I want to...family, business, others.

Also, I have a rule to avoid talking politics on there...that's why I come here. While I will comment on a friend's political link or comment, I don't put them out. Those who know me...and isn't that what "friends" are...should know where I stand on most issues. I'd rather see stupid videos instead.

As far as emails...I set up a gmail account where all those critters go...then once a week, delete them. I wish there was a way to shut those off as well as control some of the "news" I get (such as "so and so is now a fan of blow-up dolls"...TMI).

The words of my late father always ring in my head...there are friends and there are acquaintances...

22. They hate me over on facebook polls.
At least three times I have been called a paid democratic party operative because I apparently debate much too well and can produce numerous links to back up my claims in a matter of minutes. Any DUers know how to actually become a paid secret agent? I could use the money. But seriously Du has been an invaluable educational resource and the search function puts a wealth of information at hand, thanks DU.

25. I connected with some cousins I haven't seen in decades
I love seeing their photo albums and reading about the goings on in their lives.

I also like playing some of the games, like Yoville and Farmville.

Yoville gives me the opportunity to "work" and earn coins, then whenever I feel like going on a shopping spree, I spend my Yoville coins instead of real money.

On Farmville, I get to be a virtual farmer and harvest and plant crops and buy all kinds of neat stuff for my farm (again with the coins earned by "selling" the crops)

I have an anxiety disorder, and it's a pretty good way to distract myself sometimes when I need to relax.

:)

PS...also there are some pretty good groups on FB, and one of them, the "2010 California Protection of Marriage Act" is a hoot. Basically it's a slap at the people who want to "protect" marriage by denying gays the right to marry. Its underlying message is, "If we can't get married, then YOU can't get divorced". Gotta "protect marriage", you know...

;)

The app can still snag your info whenever one of your friends uses it.

To block the app, click on its name — "Living Social" or whatever. That'll take you to its page, where there's a bar that says "Block this application." Et viola, it can't see your stuff! :D

My FB experience these days amounts to deleting emails I get from FB. I went there this morning for the first time in ages because I got a notification that someone had mentioned me in a post or on a wall or somewhere. That little journey inspired me to write this OP.

I love Twitter. I've met some great progressives there and the news alerts are wonderful. It's also very easy to navigate, unlike FB.

79. do you see them when they are on the bottom?
my eyes pass over those. it's easy to block the ones at the bottom by adjusting your browser, but it's impossible to block the ones on the side.

80. Nope. But then again,
my spouse and daughter are constantly cracking up or yelling at the TV ads, and asking for my response - which is "Huh? It's an ad. Why would I be paying any attention to it?" I'm pretty good at tuning them out.

58. I can't stand Facebook either--I joined it in summer of 2008
but was interested in it for all of a month. Too much stuff to keep caught up on when there are many other things I prefer doing online. I also agree that it's not colorful enough. I also has too many "friends" in name only. I guess Facebook is useful for people who've a lot of actual friends and family they want to keep up with who are all on Facebook--but as a loner I find it overrated and overhyped.

81. Actually, I am, but hey, if you want to put your most intimate life details
out there in public view, knowing that a future potential employer, or even an identity thief can access at any time, go ahead. There is never a shortage of idiots. And yes, I've told two members of my family that they were idiots for doing so.

67. I made the mistake of "friending" too many people that I don't know IRL
They post constantly, often about stuff like sports that I have no interest in, and my real friends post much less often. I've also sought out a couple of very old friends, and then realized there's a reason why I haven't talked to them in 30 years.

I feel like a little hungry birdie- I keep going there and pecking around for food, but I only get a few pellets among all the pebbles.

73. It's weird that half of the reasons you hate Facebook are things you can control.
Change your email settings to "None". Don't befriend people who you don't know.

Also, Facebook isn't any less bland and unappealing than DU. No offense DU creator people, I prefer bland, but in comparison to Facebook I'm not seeing much of a difference.

77. I know. It's laughable.
Even my 66 year old dad knows the basic rules of the road and privacy settings on Facebook. It's not that hard.

74. Ahh Facebook
I effectively keep mine stripped of politics.
I delete those that offend my sensibilities.
I can do politics here. I don't do it there.
I use it strictly for talking to my family, coworkers and friends.

75. I love facebook. It is simple, easy to use, and a great way to keep up with friends.

Granted, I only have 28 contacts. But, for my purposes, it rocks.

I have hooked up with two old school friends, and ended a long standing feud with a cousin through FB.

I am not looking for color or pop or anything but a simple format for keeping in contact with friends.

76. I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience
with FB; I've had the opposite experience. I've found a lot of old friends I've lost touch with, including from high school and college; I can keep up with a lot of communities and groups I used to be a part of; and I can keep up daily with a lot of close family members, since I live several states away from most of them. I agree there are some annoying aspects, like the ubiquitous quizzes, and all the updates on all the stupid "activities" like monster farm and yoville, etc., etc. But I just ignore those and go with the rest of it.
