As if the world isn't crazy enough: American church plans Bible burning, books by Mother Teresa
American church plans Bible burning, books by Mother Teresa

A pastor in the United States plans to gather his congregation to burn Bibles and religious books by various Christian authors, including Mother Teresa, because they are "Satanic".

The New Revised Version Bible, the American Standard Version Bible, and even the New King James Version are all pronounced to be works of the Devil by Pastor Grizzard and his followers.

Grizzard said the first King James translation of the Bible is the only true declaration of Gods word, and that all others are "satanic".

"We are burning books that we believe to be Satanic," he underlined.

The pastor and his associates will also be burning books by various Christian authors and inappropriate translations from the original Hebrew as well as music of every genre.

I particularly love the two comments the article has elicited:

3. Ahhh... But I could wait until the fire was good and hot
Toss a King James Bible into the fire and run

I'm sure very few would chase me.
They'd be too busy jumping into the fire to save that book

I could watch the fall-out on the news

5. I oppose the burning of any book, no matter how vile...
These people have no redeeming virtues.

8. The King James Bible is very poetic.
I grew up with that Bible, so it is familiar and easy for me to use.

When I studied the Bible in college, we used other translations, which are more accurate.

Years ago, I read an article about the King James translation. The article contended that there are many things in that translation that are propaganda, politics, or designed to please the king. For example, there are far too many references to witchcraft. The men of those times were trying to take away the power of women and trying to wipe out the old religion. Also, the king was raised to believe that his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, had been a witch and a whore.

9. I can tell you what's accurate:
When I took religion classes at a Presbyterian college, we used the New English Bible, now known as the Revised English Bible.

It's from original sources to English.

However, yes, the King James is really poetic and it's the one I have pieces of in my head.

With all that lovely grammar like "Whither thou goest, I will go".

10. That's the one I used in college, too.
My husband used the Oxford Annotated Bible. I have used his Bible a few times to look up things and to make comparisons between translations.

12. The King James seems more fit to "read aloud" than the
translations in more modern English. . .I'd love to see literacy statistics lined up with the various versions.

11. How sweet. Our own little,
homegrown Taliban. Bet the good pastor also thinks Jesus was blond, blue-eyed and spoke English (I guess King James version).

14. It would be kind of fun for us liberal folk to all donate a banned book to
that area's local public library as a response to this church's book-burning fervor.
