The parents of Cho (the gunman) didn't commit suicide, did they?
I'm 99% sure this hasn't happened, as it would be all over the Web, but my Korean roommate just told me he heard as much in the newspapers back home. ("But they haven't announced it here, yet.") Bogus or not?

On another note, this massacre was appparently the top news story in South Korea, which is pretty incredible. According to him, any time something happens involving Koreans in America, it's front-page news in Seoul. I was about to tell him about the anti-Korean aspects of the '91 LA Riots, and he surprised me by informing me that most people in his home country know all about it. Are we Americans that informed about (or interested in) news stories involving our countrymen overseas? I suspect not.

37. Have you ever taken a course in logic? If you have, you may understand the logic fault is unproved.
Edited on Tue Apr-17-07 10:24 PM by Radio_Lady
You probably would be better off to say that "Basically, SOME Americans are idiots." I agree with that. I can't remember how to diagram it, but perhaps someone else will.

Your problem is that: MOST does NOT equal SOME

All of the class of Americans are NOT idiots.
Therefore, some of the class of Americans are idiots.
Therefore, some of the class of Americans are NOT idiots.

As I recall, it's the MOST part that you cannot prove. I got an "A" in logic, but that was a long time ago. Good night and good luck!

48. I always love to hear this "progressive" view of the American people.
I find it to be a very undemocratic (small "d") view that most people are idiots (and therefor cannot be trusted to govern themselves?).

Let us just hope that none of our candidates adopt the slogan "Most Americans are idiots" for their campaigns. (The freepers love it when we post slogans like this.)

tell me that we aren't a breed of lazy, selfish, narcissistic idiots.

It has not one damn thing to do with being progressive or regressive. It's the way people have become.

51. I did (the turn around thing).
I am telling you that we are not a "breed" of lazy, selfish, narcissistic idiots. I see a lot of people (when I turn around) who are good people. Unfortunately, they do not always agree with me on political issues (given where I live). But they don't agree with me on many things and they are still good people.

Do you have a preferred form of government that is superior to our feeble experiment at having idiots attempt to govern themselves?

As for the suicide, I heard on MSNBC earlier it didn't happen (and was perplexed because I hadn't heard about the initial rumor).

31. The FCC couldn't have done anything about it.
It's a matter of public record.

Maybe I need to start a thread about this - folks, you have no privacy. Never did. The Internet makes it easier to get said information, but if I know your name and find out your address in the phone book or on Google, I can publish it.

It's not against the law - and shouldn't be. Morally, it might be unethical, but it's not and never has been illegal. The more we have out in the sunshine, the better.

BTW, I can get your name from your license plate number, too. That's public record. You're notified (at least in my state) when someone requests that info - but it's public record.

Go down to any courthouse on your next weekday off and just start prying about. You can find anything out about anyone and it's perfect legal - and should be. This is how we catch government officials in crimes, this is how we find out about dubious folk in our community. There is a valid reason for all this.

I'm not just picking on you Donna, and forgive me for using your post to respond to in order to make a point: when reporters used to do their jobs well, open public records were a necessity.

I used to spend half my reporting day at the courthouse examining records to use in articles. You can, too.

Oh yeah, that's right, siccing the FBI only works for half the country, I forgot.

How did they give out the address? One of those, "And this two story frame house on Cherry Hill Drive in lower-wherever is where the shooter grew up and his parents" etc etc? Or did they actually give more specific info than that?

I don't think they gave out a specific address, but they were saying which neighborhood his parents lived in.

Of course last night, Geraldo was showing a picture of an Asian young man (face covered up by Geraldo)with rifles who was NOT the shooter. Geraldo said the man wasn't the shooter but showed the picture anyway.

38. I just saw some FOX news as well.
And yes, they showed the front of the duplex with the whole address in view. I can't recall the whole address but there were at least 5 numbers in the home address. Couples with how news sources have been talking about what town they live in, it would be pretty easy to figure out where they live. Not to mention, FOX interviewing the neighbors on top of it, I hope there is no retaliation against this family.

15. It's about "Saving Face" in Asian Culture. That their son did this would mean
that the FAMILY WAS DISGRACED. I have a feeling that they are headed to Gitmo so that Bushies can take advantage of their cultural problems and make this a Korean Terrorist attack and that the parents can be portrayed as part of it. Bush & Co. are so clueless and heartless they might not know that the parents really should be guarded because as Koreans they might "off themselves" in shame.

 Just saying.... But, Bushies and Corporate Whore Media would love any story about the parents and the daughter who graduated from Princeton who was Cho's older sister.

Koreans are worried about a backlash. I think Japanese, like a lot of us, are wondering what it is about life in modern technological societies that creates damaged individuals like this and how can we preven more of them from goin gto this extreme?

And meanwhile, white right-wingers in the states lament that all of the students weren't packing heat so they could have all taken Cho out in a blaze of crossfire...

He shot and killed a large number of people and most of those people are said to have multiple bullet wounds. He only bought that first gun in March. Did he practice the shooting at all? How did that happen that he was able to shoot so many people?

39. Have you played an FPS game AND shot a gun? Completely different beasts.
In FPS games you shoot by clicking a mouse or pushing a button on a gamepad. There is no weight to support in your hand, there is no recoil. Aside from the fact that the game is depicting the firing of a gun, there's very little similarity.

You could not in any way successfully train as a marksman solely by playing FPS games.

And no not solely, but FPS do help me with target acquisition skills. And some people do use joysticks with trigger buttons which are more gun-like. Do not think I'm trying to blame video games, I'm not. I'm just making the point that everyone seems to be asking: "Where did he get the skills?"

43. nope
The military uses FPS to teach squad maneuver and tactical thinking. The Army tankers use modified golf carts to practice field maneuvers for the tanks. The carts are wrapped up and the driver can only see through a periscope, just like with a buttoned-up tank. This isn't good for a live fire exercise but it's a lot cheaper than driving around the real deal. It lets them reserve tank time for the really important stuff.

I've fired guns and I've played shooters. Ain't no relation between one and the other. You might have a slightly better case when comparing a light gun game with real-life shooting but there's still a hell of a difference between the two, like comparing a realistic racing game vs. driving in the Indy 500.
