Sen. McCain's mother hospitalized in Portugal
(CNN) – The mother of U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain is hospitalized in Lisbon, Portugal, after injuring her head in a fall, McCain's spokeswoman said Friday.

Roberta McCain, 97, was visiting Lisbon as a tourist when she fainted and hurt her head, spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said.

McCain is stable and will be held for observation, Dr. Fatima Palmero of the Sao Jose Hospital told CNN. It is not clear when McCain might leave the hospital, Palermo said.

The senator has spoken to his mother and the doctors treating her, who report that she is recovering well, Buchanan said.

4. My mother said that McCain's mother was THE most beautiful woman she ever met.
Submarine Force Birthday Balls in the late '50s when 'Junior' was head of Submarine Flotilla Six.

'Junior' was everything his son is not.

She really was beautiful, and she was still attractive in recent years for someone her age.

11. Yes. My mother was not one to comment on the appearances of other women...
but she even remembered the dress Roberta McCain wore to the ball.

I know someone that served as a sailor on the sub 'Junior' was skipper of. He said Junior was a great sub skipper because he knew when to take orders from his sailors. He was the 'plays well with others' kind of guy that his son emphatically is not.

15. Her hair went silver fairly young. Mom remembers her in a bright blue dress. With the hair
she said it was just stunning. Yes, that's 'Junior' speaking in this photograph. Everything his son is not.

3. Hope she recovers well!
I like that spirited lady! And I hope she recovers quickly.

And, by the way, it will give her a chance to experience "socialized healthcare!"
Maybe she'll come back and give a testimony about the Portuguese health care in front of the senate. ..!

14. If McCain had to have her admitted to a US military hospital there are two not too far away.

His mother would probably be admitted being a widow and mother of US Navy officers.
And if he had to McCain could pull a few strings being a US Senator.

There is a US Navy hospital about 60 miles NW of Gibraltar and a US Air Force facility outside of Madrid.
