Not sure when an injectable vaccine will be available in my area.

I feel about the same. I am a little hungry though, not having eaten lunch.

1. Got the shot this morning.
Feeling a little bit tired and headachy, but nothing serious. Certainly nothing approaching the misery of the flu.

2. I'm too old (just barely) for the inhaled version...
waiting for the injectable (two more weeks was the last update).

$25 at my local pharmacy (when it gets here). I hope before Halloween, otherwise I'll have to dress as a doctor this year (complete with surgical gloves) to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters.

4. Well as long as you're a scary, crazy doctor covered in blood it will be okay.

12. Yeah, I was thinking "mad scientist" anyway.
Set up a manikin in a fake coffin (robotic head and eyes would be a big plus), strobe lights and some big fake switches and dials, chains to keep the "creature" locked up.

A hollowed out stomach cavity hidden from view with a steaming bowel of chili hidden inside the manikin... and when the kids come up the walkway, I will start the lights and walk over to the body and dip in "to see what the victim had to eat before he died!" and eat a big bite of dripping chili!

And if robotic, I could trigger the head to turn and the eyes to pop open as I "dig in".

It's a lot of work, but it might be worth it.

Gives me a great reason to wear a "doctors mask" and "surgical gloves".

I have almost everything except the manikin and the strobe lights.

3. How were you able to get it?
My husband has diabetes and wants to get one, but last I heard there were only 200 sent to my entire county.

7. I'm hearing that pharmacies are getting them....
...independently of health departments, so it might not hurt to call around.

As a medical student, I was required to get the shot by my medical school. All medical students were vaccinated today.

18. Intranasal vaccines are nothing new. 20 years ago we had one for kennel
cough in dogs, and 15 years ago I gave the feline upper respiratory intranasal vaccine for a while.

8. Does having H1N1 count?
I would have vaccinated, but by the time I got around to it, I already had it

let that be a lesson to the procrastinators out there!

10. As long as you tested positive for Type A influenza.
If not, you might still consider getting the vaccine, if you get the chance.

Seriously, I would if it would do good. Thing is, the docs aren't testing around here, unless you are hospitalized.

19. And THAT is why you should still get the shot. You are assuming you had
H1N1, but they found out that a lot of suspected cases this year were NOT H1N1 at all.

Edited on Thu Oct-22-09 03:22 PM by AlienGirl
My arm hurts, because the nurse accidentally stabbed me twice, and I'm a little tired and unwell feeling; but I'll take a couple of days of this over the likelihood of high hospital debt anyday.

Tucker

On edit: I got it free from the Health Department, at my dr's suggestion.

15. What if you just had the real thing instead?
Globetrotting earlier this year - I got Hong Kong variant A, Texas variant B (I may have the A's and B's switched), Russian variant, and just when I thought it was all over, two months later yee haw swine flu. Each variant was progressively less taxing but the swine flu gave me the biggest swollen lymph nodes of the bunch - I remember it hurt to chew soup, but I got over it the fastest.

I'm good now for the next two - three years. I've got antibodies for every damn variant now; while people around me are dropping like flies. Bring on the Ebola and Hanta! :P

Seriously, the vaccine would have probably been easier.

23. Me, too. But why is that?
I have a deathly fear of needles and was all set to get the intranasal. Then I found out they don't give it to persons 50 or over.

24. The nasal is live/attenuated versus protein antigens for the injected.
I'm assuming the risk or getting sick is greater with live/attenuated so they don't want older folks to get it, or something like that.

30. The point is, however, even if you don't care, if you are immunized, you increase
herd immunity and help decrease the numbers of people nationwide who will catch this and become sick from it.

but what's laughable about the case for immunization?

34. Immunization is commendable and I have no problem with it.
I just don't plan on doing it.

Also, I was laughing at his "swine flu worries about getting me" comment. I thought it was funny.

Relax man. Sheesh!!

I would if/when I could. Actually am going on a trip in November (been saving for 2 years) and would rather have the Vax then get sick.

35. My son and I recieved ours yesterday
Overall, a great experience. The county health department is the only place in our area that is receiving them, so we went there. They had plenty of vaccines for the people that had been approved and a separate stockpile just for children. I had to be approved before I was able to get on the list, since I have respiratory problems, but they were letting any and all children that were there get them.

I thought that was a great idea. Since most of the biggest problems from H1N1 are occurring with young children, it's only fitting that they receive the inoculations first.
