Man pleads guilty to DWI in motorized La-Z-Boy

Thursday, October 22, 2009

(10-22) 09:05 PDT Duluth, Minn. (AP) --

A Minnesota man has pleaded guilty to driving his motorized La-Z-Boy chair while drunk.

A criminal complaint says 62-year-old Dennis LeRoy Anderson told police he left a bar in the northern Minnesota town of Proctor on his chair after drinking eight or nine beers.

Prosecutors say Anderson's blood alcohol content was 0.29, more than three times the legal limit, when he crashed into a parked vehicle in August 2008. He was not seriously injured.

Police said the chair was powered by a converted lawnmower and had a stereo and cup holders.

4. Totally inappropriate! If he was going to drive drunk, it should be on a motorized barstool.
;-)

6. She took away my car keys but she forgot about my Ole John Deere
I had an old uncle in Florida who drove his riding mower to the liquor store a couple times a week to stack up. He had a milk carton attached behind the seat.

8. You can tell who lives in Florida and who doesn't. I don't find this shocking at all, do you?
Hell, it's like a corny version of The Road Warrior here in St Pete. You never know what is going to go whizzing by and the unwritten rule is that as long as it isn't actually a car or motorcycle, then it must be OK to do it drunk. And I am inclined to agree, despite being a teetotaler myself. On any given day I see golf carts, go carts, motorized skateboards, motorized bicycles, tricycles, all manner of electric wheelchairs and scooters. And yes, the other day I saw a man park a riding lawn mower outside the corner store while he went inside, presumably for beer.

10. Out here in the West we just put a "farm" plate on it and go crazy.
...Or if it's tractor-like in any way, just take the shoulder wherever you want to go. :D

I always talk about the old-timer in my last Colorado town that had no license for too many DUIs. Took the tractor to and from the bar, got called on it, explained he was mowing the ditches.

He did, in fact, have the ditch mowing attachment on. Finally the sheriff told him he needed to mow ditches other than the straight b-line from his house to the bar if he wanted the story to have any merit. :D

Sure enough. Last I was in town the ditches were good and short along several routes from his house to the bar.

11. I built one of those for a parade once. It was a blast to drive.
My family has a long history of powering up odd things. My brother-in-law in California used to have an appliance repair business, so he built a gasoline-powered washing machine vehicle and another one from a refrigerator and put them in the local small-town parade.

He and I both had carnival bumper cars, too. We powered them from a generator on a motor home and drove those in parades, too. Making odd things driveable is an old trick for us.
