There's been a lot of news coverage recently about how only 20% of Americans now identify themselves as Republicans. A big part of the GOP's problem, in my opinion, is that people no longer have any real clear idea---or even a vague idea---of just what Republicans "stand for". Are they the party of Limbaugh and Beck or Snowe and Graham? Is there a real difference, when all is said and done?
Well, that's THEIR problem and it couldn't happen to a more deserving group, right?
Will we learn from their demise or will we simply become different whores working the other side of Corporate Avenue?
Today, the CBO announced that the public option health care reform bill will cost less than the 900 billion dollar "target"; will reduce the deficit; and, will dramatically increase coverage.
A majority of every surveyed demographic---INCLUDING REPUBLICANS---favor a public option.
We have 60 senators, a commanding majority in Congress and the White House.
For the life of me, I can't think of any other explanation for the difficulty public option proponents are encountering except that our party, TOO, is effectively owned by corporate America. Not totally---effectively, but the difference won't matter to most voters. Our leaders, good and bad, will be thrown into the cynical "they're all lying hypocrites" bag along with the GOP and the Teabaggers.
So, I don't really see what we have to lose by going for broke: DARE the Repubs and pseudo-Dems to filibuster. Put it all on the table: Public option or NO BILL! If we REFUSE to stand with flesh and blood people against the Corporations who are convinced they've purchased our government, we don't deserve to retain power. It really is that simple. YES, it is!
No, I don't want the GOP to rule. But, if Baucus and Lieberman and their ilk are allowed to define "what we stand for", then to hell with it. I don't want to be that type of "Democrat" and I won't be sending a check or knocking on doors or hanging signs or manning a phone for them.
We need to pull this out or quit making fun of the Republicans.
