Poll question: People who use the word "Leftist" should...
Edited on Mon Oct-19-09 01:44 PM by YOY
Recently a strange word has popped up using the word "Left" and combining it with "Socialist", "Fascist", "Communist", well...you get the gist.

Much like people who use the word "synergy" to describe something outside of the sphere of Chemistry it makes me oddly reactive in a most negative way.

MAybe it's the perversion of the English language. Maybe it's just a knee jerk to dumbfuckery.

At any rate what is your reaction and how should such folks who use the word "leftist" be treated?

5. Actually, the word has been around since the 1920s, it's not recent at all.
I have no problem with it as a descriptor, it is neither good nor bad.

8. Other.
A new political movement called "Leftism" should be formed to cater to all the "leftists".

about people not conforming to their view... we had a name for folks like that in my neighborhood, I'll leave it at that.

That 3rd line, no matter how you meant it, is funny, because sometimes I must admit, I would have selected that one out of the bunch. They give little reason to tolerate their BS.

But I reserve my right to point out (with a fricking vengence) that they haven't a winning streak in much of anything as a "cultural movement".

addressing or referring to as a "leftist".

As for the word, "synergy", it's use as a metaphor in a non-chemical context is often perfectly apt and descriptive.

17. Even used by George Orwell (as an 'ism')
"1945 G. ORWELL in Contemp. Jewish Record VIII. 169 During the past few years there has been what amounts to a counter-attack against the rather shallow Leftism which was fashionable in the previous decade." (citiation in the Oxford English Dictionary)

And he normally get held up as an example of clear political writing. Sure it's the recent 'problem' you think it is?

19. Are you referring to people on the right who use it as a pejorative against
liberals and other left of center people, or are you referring to people who are on the more radical left who use it to describe themselves? That what change my mind on what should happen to them.

21. I'm a leftist.
I prefer that term because I identify more with various movements on the real ideological left than I do with self-described liberals and others who are only on the "left" in the sense that they're a bit less right wing than the typical American.

I suggest you learn more about politics and language (or at least learn to Google) before you pop off like that.
