IAEA Chief Says Iran Nuclear Threat Over-Stated
Source: Washington TV

Washington, 19 October (WashingtonTV)—International Atomic Energy Chief , Mohamed ElBaradei, on Sunday said that the threat of Iran’s nuclear program was “exaggerated”, and cautioned that new sanctions against Tehran would be ineffective.

“The threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program is exaggerated. I do not think that we will wake up tomorrow and say that Iran has a nuclear weapon,” he said in an interview with the Austrian daily, Die Presse.

He asserted that negotiations were the only way to resolve the nuclear standoff, and warned against further sanctions or a possible military strike on Iran.

“New sanctions would cause an intensification of the confrontation. The only solution is to build trust,” said ElBaradei.

Tehran is already under three rounds of United Nations Security Council resolutions for failing to halt its uranium enrichment program, which Western powers suspect Iran is using to develop fuel for a nuclear bomb. Tehran denies the charge.

According to ElBaradei, US President Barack Obama has realized that negotiations with Iran are the only possible solution, adding that the previous six years “have been wasted”.
