Besides which, I really want single-payer, and I know that the individual mandate will do enormous damage to the Democratic Party.

We might be better off with nothing at this point and, instead, pushing for single-payer in 2011.

16. Perhaps I'm mis-reading, a little too jumpy about it perhaps, but

it seems he is saying that this Baucus bill is a "good step" for now, I guess I'm wondering how long "now" is.

Is it just good enough to get it out of committee so the real work can start?

Or is he saying should this bill be the one the final bill resembles, he's okay with that for "now"?

So many seem to have caved on their undying support for PO, perhaps I'm reading too much into one or two sentences in his messages on the linked site.

19. I took it as procedurally, not as legislatively

In order for the Dems to control the process, they needed both Finance and HELP to weigh in. With only the HELP bill, it would have gone to a full floor debate and more Republican time sinks. In addition, we now have the option of reconciliation as the Finance committee controls the budget. Without that, we don't have the option of an up or down 51 vote and are limited to 60.

So yes, it was very important that this POS bill got out of committee.

20. I know you're right, but I'm just getting so disheartened with the total

focus on this bill as if it is the end all of the discussion. I'm probably having a severe knee jerk reaction to my own level of fear and panic that in the end I will have no faith in anyone in Washington DC/Congress/Whitehouse/Dem/Repub.
