1. A very thorough article. We now have European-style unemployment without the safety net.
For the past 30 years the free marketeers have demanded deregulation and pro-business, anti-people economics so that America would not suffer the stagnation that existed in Europe. Now we see how successful that has been.

Maybe if they paid the CEOs less, they could afford to hire young people to do actual work.

4. The case for action is strong...
But the suggested action seems to be to whittle away at the minimum wage. To help the workers, remove or weaken more of the rules that are there to help the workers? Hmm.

'The case for action is strong. Governments should act now before the damage gets even worse, argues David G. Blanchflower, an economist at Dartmouth College who recently served on the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. He's not sure what will work, but he favors trying everything from subsidizing education and training to cutting minimum wages for young people and trainees. "It has to be now," says Blanchflower. "It can't be in two years' time."'

'Free-market economists favor removing obstacles to employment of the young, such as high minimum wages. "The government in some ways is contributing to this problem," says Kristen Lopez Eastlick, senior research analyst for the employer-backed Employment Policies Institute. She points out that the 40% hike in the federal minimum wage over the past two years made it less appealing to hire young workers. One possibility: Some U.S. states and European countries have enacted subminimum wages just for young people or people enrolled in apprenticeships.'

5. I prefer
Reforming the way Corporations pay their executives and the way Wall Street operates. You remove the demand for unsustainable growth quarter to quarter by the exchanges and executives you'd be amazed and how quickly things start to trickle down to the rest of us. If you make it so that a CEO needs to have a long tenure to make a fortune at a company, companies long term planning will start looking better.

8. Just wait until the Democratic Party FORCES them to buy Health Insurance.
Goodbye Youth Vote.

Pretty smart delaying implementation until AFTER the 2012 elections.

11. My nephew is 24
He graduated from Mizzou last December - almost a year ago - with a degree in Engineering.

He's currently grateful to be working part-time at a local pizza joint. He's thinking now of joining the Army because he's panicking that he can't use his major anywhere else, and pretty soon it's use it or lose it.
