McCain says he's open to GOP nominating Sarah Palin for president in 2012
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/10/11/mccain.afghanistan/

McCain warns against 'historic' error in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain said any added military deployment in Afghanistan smaller than the 40,000 troops reportedly requested by the top U.S. commander there "would be an error of historic proportions." ...

McCain called Palin "a formidable force" in the GOP and said he remains open to the possibility of Palin being his party's presidential nominee in 2012. "I have great affection for her," McCain continued. But "did we always agree on everything in the past? Will we in the future? No."

While McCain said he could not predict what would happen in the next presidential election, the Arizona Republican said he is open to many potential nominees for his party -- including Palin.

8. Not really, just stating the obvious
It is clear that the Palin and McCain wings of the GOP do not get along. He knows Sarah has a chance to rally the nutty GOP base and actually win the nomination. That is the first part he talks about. She is a formital force in the GOP 20% of Primary Voters. He says they do not agree, so this means he does not approve of her way of approaching things but is pretty well helpless to the rabid 20% so he will cordially step back and let the runaway freight train that is Palin do its thing.

He must be thinking of retireing and leaving a scorched earth behind.

9. Read: Americans were stupid enough to put Bush into office, why not Palin?
McCain is smart enough to underestimate neither the ignorance of the average voter nor the impact of mainstream media.

15. A Palin nominatin in '12 would make McCain in '08 look like a dream candidate.
Sandwiched between two idiots like Bush and Palin, history books would forever mention how the GOP had one last chance to correct itself but instead went careening off the cliff into obscurity.

16. Well....
He may say that, but I think it's only for show, and once her book comes out that may all change. She wants to get her side of the story out about the election, and from what I have seen of Palin, she is going to make sure she comes out looking good, and McCain and his team will get the blame for everything!

20. McCain hates his party that badly that he wants Obama re-elected?
He would want his party to nominate Palin and thereby destroy itself as a viable political opposition?

Maybe McCain wants some center-right party to replace the Republicans and feels this is the surest way to do it.
If so, he'll get his wish if they nominate her.

30. Yet McCain gets a pass from his daughter in her vapid "what's wrong w/ the Republicans" tweets/blogs
The little "trust fund baby" should consider who first thrust Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber into the spotlight before she starts pointing fingers elsewhere.

28. What else can he say?
He chose her as his running mate (or allowed her to be chosen for him). If he disses her now, he's saying, in effect, that he made a bad choice. So now he's forever stuck with having to say nice things about her.
