Woman shot by police, accused of assault, tried 4 times, finally acquitted
Kimberly Hudson was shot by police, spent months in jail and endured four trials that her father said have cost him almost $140,000.

But on Friday, a Johnson County judge ended her 2½-year journey through criminal court.

“Ms. Hudson, you are discharged,” Presiding Judge Stephen Tatum said as he acquitted Hudson of charges of assaulting a police officer.

She answered simply, “Thank you so much, your honor.”

Olathe police declined to comment, but Hudson contends that officers overreacted when they shot her on April 23, 2007, and lied about it.

1. Odd. Sprinkling crack on the suspect usually works....
Wonder what went wrong here?

6. I think if she were ugly she'd be in prison now.
She cleans up real nice- it's hard to see a knife wielding drunk there.

7. Drunk woman sleeping in bed cannot be disarmed by TWO police officers, so she's shot.
Jesus H. Christ, that is fucked up.

Two weeks in the hospital with two police officers in the room. Now that's a wise expenditure of the taxpayers' dollars.

And they STILL want to try her again.

Prosecutors like that asshole should be tarred and feathered.

8. a complete waste of taxpayers money
and per the evidence, the police lied about the shooting. i'm all for tar and feathers too, but this prosecutor should have been fired.

9. Yes, fired right after the tarring and feathering.
The problem is these bastards ruin people's lives in their zealous, blind pursuit of a "win" or in some demented sense of loyalty to the police. They ignore evidence, fabricate evidence, lie and cover shit up in order to send innocent people to prison or even to die.

Yet there is only disbarrment or maybe a bad rep for it.

This type of prosecution should be punishable. Severely punishable. These people should serve as much time as the aggrieved victim would have had to serve. Then we'd have a much fairer administration of justice.

16. The current prosecutor is not the same one who was in office when this happened
The previous one was a rw nutbag. This one seems more reasonable. But he needs to let this case go. What an embarrassment.

20. This just goes to show that there should be no statute of limitations on holding DA's
accountable for their illegal acts. That prosecutor should not be allowed to walk away from this--probably to a "better" job--just because he has moved on.

Thanks for informing me about the new DA, proud2BlibKansan.

23. Forgetting that she had a knife
Why don't you try? I'll get wasted and you can see if you can get a knife out of my hands without shooting me.
I'm not tough, but I'm certain everyone is leaving in an ambulance, myself included.

10. Fucking cops lied, and they and the city of Olathe will deservedly pay.

But something needs to happen to that conviction-hungry DA for repeatedly prosecuting a case he knew was bunk.

11. So the cops shot someone who was asleep when they arrived.
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 10:56 PM by ThomCat
They could have simply disarmed her, but instead they woke her up and started a confrontation. That was Fuck Up Number 1.

Then they Shot Her instead of being persistent and talking her out of the knife. She refused to just drop it quick enough so they stopped trying the non-violent option. Fuck Up Number 2.

Then they put her in jail for 8 months after THEY attacked HER, and they have repeatedly lied to cover up that they were the ones that attacked her. Fuck Up Number 3.

And they have lied to cover up that none of this was justified. Fuck Up Number 4.

Yet, par for the course, the police and the DA are entirely backing and protecting the cops who should be in prison over this, and they wasted huge amounts of public resources trying her 4 times trying to convict her and keep her in prison.

:wtf:

I really hope she wins a HUGE civil judgment against them. I hope the outrage over that civil judgment is so angry, so public, that it forces the DA and the cops out of their jobs and shakes up the administration in both departments.

I am very sick of this kind of corruption in law enforcement.

This woman needed help. She did not need to be attacked and criminalized. Those cops did NOTHING to be helpful. They did nothing to help anyone. Everything they did resulted in making the situation worse for everyone involved. :grr:

14. It is very bizarre. I really wonder who those cops thought they were helping.
:(

I've talked a whole lot about having principles today, and sticking to them. It is very obvious that those cops don't have any principles. They aren't there to serve or protect. They aren't there for the good of the community.

What good did they think they were doing? What did they think they were accomplishing? Is it just a contest to make sure they can take someone down and arrest someone as often as possible? How do they live with themselves if that is how they deal with people?

13. This is why cops need training for mental health calls
and why you should know if your locals get CIT training or not. If they don't, calling them can get someone dead.

I bet these guys had zip. That young lady is lucky to be alive.

17. They're just trying to be tough on "crime".
This and the hundreds of other stories like it that happen every day are the bastard offspring of the conservative "Tough on crime" agenda that states we must treat everyone as a criminal unless they're in a uniform, a robe, or a ten thousand dollar suit. Being tough on crime has always been code for not allowing people to get off on a technicality like innocence. Especially if they look like they might be poor or a minority.
