I just woke up to find that Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize...
I've been fairly sick and literally slept away the entire day.

This comes as a total surprise to me. I didn't even know that he was a candidate.

But it brings up a very important question.

Does the rest of the world like Obama more than the people of the US?

22. It's five Norwegians on the Nobel Peace Committee, not the rest of the world.

30. Well, the rest of the world seems pretty goddamned happy about it.
Unlike the Taliban, Iran, Rush, Beck, and a multitude of DUers.

5. They were talking about this on one of the morning shows...
During the Bush years, it seemed the world community loved Americans more than their president. Now it seems the world community loves Pres. Obama more than Americans.

Not to say they don't love Americans, but I think it's 70% like for him and maybe 60% like for us.

It doesn't help when you have the teabaggers and birthers taking on the face of our nation. :eyes:

12. What a coincidence, so did he!!!
As to the question: The world outside the US is the potential target for military intervention. So, the hope the world has is that we holster our guns and Barack is doing that (albeit slower than anticipated).

So just for changing the conversation on a world wide scale (no small feat) he earned the award.

14. So is this award given out because of quantity or quality?
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 08:38 PM by armyowalgreens
I understand the achievements of Obama. But I'm surprised that no one else was more deserving. I really am.

15. Either Obama is being humble or he agrees with you
"Friend," he wrote. "This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

"To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

"But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century."

He continued, "today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come."

But I really do not understand why he deserves the prize. I must be missing something.

I don't really know the kind of qualifications required in order to win such a prize.

20. Words only count when they change things...
I know that his words have changed things. But I am wondering if a year of speeches can qualify someone for such a prestigious award.

Like I said, I do not fully understand the qualifications for such an award. I'm just surprised that there was no one else more deserving.

today from anyone who does not think he qualifies "Like I said, I do not fully understand the qualifications for such an award. I'm just surprised that there was no one else more deserving."

Here's a good place to start.

there's the Islam speech, ending the missle shield program in eastern Europe, overcoming 200 years of racism, negotiating inspections of Iran nuclear facilities, demanding an end to Israeli settlements, withdrawing troops from Iraq, closing Gitmo, improving diplomacy all over the world...
