Soldier arrested after standoff

Herington man holds police at bay for about 1.5 hours

HERINGTON -- A 33-year-old Fort Riley soldier was arrested late Sunday after allegedly holding his family hostage in their Herington home and keeping police at bay for about an hour and a half.

According to a news release from the Herington Police Department, police, deputies from the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper surrounded the house, and blocked off traffic to the area, after receiving a report of a man taking his family hostage. Surrounding residents were told to stay in their homes.

The soldier allegedly put on military body armor and stated he wanted to "go down in a blaze of glory," according to the news release. He had nine loaded firearms in the house, including two assault rifles, a .45-caliber pistol, multiple rounds of assorted ammunition and various knives and military equipment.

Shortly after police arrived, the man released his wife and four children, who ran to a neighbor's house.
