ahem .... Re: Tenet's "slam dunk"

From a wapo story:

""George, how confident are you?" the president asked Tenet, in an exchange depicted in Bob Woodward's book "Plan of Attack." "Don't worry, it's a slam-dunk," Tenet said.

Note italicized.

I'm not overly familiar with Bob Woodward, but the little that I've seen him on TV, he came across as slimier than toy snot.

1. I think, and I did read the book, Tenet was refering to the CASE for war being a slam dunk,
indicating it was gonna be easily sold to the American public. But he's a slime for being a part of that 'selling' anyway.

3. The military part on the invasion would be a slam dunk.
CIA (and this administration) knew there were no WMD and they would face a 3rd world army in the march to Baghdad. I don't think anyone argued that the formal military aspect of the operation would be difficult. But many people realized that decapitating the head of the Iraqi government would seed the insurrection and that it would be impossible for any occupying army of this size to control the ensuing anarchy.

4. That's exactly right. And why that has never been clarified sufficiently by the
CIA, dems, and pundits is a mystery.

6. That's how I read it too,
but all the pundits etc, were reading it as enough evidence to go to war, not spin it...

2. i've been wondering how closely this is going to dovetail
with woodward's book -- i have very, very ambivalent feelings about him.

5. If I'm not mistaken
I thought I remembered Tenant himself declaring that the "slam dunk" comment was taken out of context and had a very misleading connection with the WMD situation. Wish I could find a link...

7. Well, that seems to be what he is going to be telling us
in his book (although so far it's been framed as him saying he didn't say it at all... which obviously he is not going to say), so there would be some consistency if so. Since posting this, I've learned that he definitely has confirmed that he did use the words "slam dunk", so now we may get to learn what the real context was.

I don't have to like Tenet to be VERY intrigued by any light he may shed on recent history.
