"Death from above!": Mom rains billiard balls from rooftop on burglars' heads
Yes, she actually shouted "Death from above!." This little firecracker is funny as hell:
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — It was raining pool balls in a neighborhood here Wednesday afternoon.
...

"I nailed him in the back," she said referring to the burglar who was near a bedroom window. "I then started throwing at the one at the front door and got him, but I don’t know where I hit him. I did miss once because there’s a dent in the front door."
...

"I heard something outside and I went to the front door where I heard these two men talking quietly," said Ollie, who had been cleaning the house. "They didn’t ring the doorbell or knock. I put my ear to the door and I sensed that something was wrong."

Without thinking of calling 911, Ollie plotted her attack. She grabbed her son’s Ben Tin bike helmet and loaded it up with balls from the pool table. She couldn’t remember later how many she had taken.

She quietly walked through the backdoor to a tree, placed the straps of the helmet in her mouth and climbed the tree. From the tree, she made her way to the roof.

"If I had known where the BB-gun was, I would have used that," Ollie said. "There’s a crossbow in the house and if I had known where the ammunition was, I would have grabbed that."

6. "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."
Personally, I would have called 911, and THEN started the rain of terror. ;)

16. While you're distracted dialing 911, the bad guy reachs you. Talking on a phone causes them no pain.
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 11:45 PM by DRoseDARs
She really should have run to a neighbor's house, but I can't really fault her for fighting off her attackers in this manner. When seconds count, in her particular home situation (layout of the house; fences too high to get over in a hurry) she might not have been able to make a proper escape to safety. As it was 2pm in the afternoon when this happened, they already saw her and knew she saw them, so running herself into a corner with a phone might have ended with her being raped and/or killed. Fighting back may well have been her only viable option for survival in this situation.

Edit: Hmm, I read the article a little more closely. Methinks she (and by my own admission now, I) may have jumped the gun on this one. She interpreted their clothing, unannounced presence at her door, and low voices to mean an impending home invasion. They might have been talking between themselves in preparation to make a sales pitch to whomever opened the door when they DID ring the doorbell. They hadn't gotten to do that before she attacked. This might have been a terrible misunderstanding on her part, that the "burglars" might be the victims of mistaken identity and assault here.

4. "Police weren’t enthusiastic about her efforts."
That's right - be afraid, and think of yourself as helpless.

Good for her.

9. This smells funny
The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. ... "I heard something outside and I went to the front door where I heard these two men talking quietly," said Ollie, who had been cleaning the house. "They didn’t ring the doorbell or knock. I put my ear to the door and I sensed that something was wrong."

That's her entire basis for pronouncing the men burglars and launching her attack?

Either something was left out of the story or this woman might be a couple of columns short of a page.

11. Does anyone say "sensed" like that in real life?
Most people say "I thought" or "It felt like". Still, I like the idea of nailing these guys. lol

14. And dressed like ninjas
Ollie described the bad guys as dressed all in black, their hats, shirts, pants and shoes.

"I know one was white because I could see his arm when he had it over his head," Ollie said.

Maybe she bagged a couple of Goth magazine salesmen :D

25. Womans intuition is real - I'm sure men have it as well
Sometimes you just 'know' something is amiss.

You 'feel' that something is not right.

The animals that share our planet have it.
Some of us have not lost it completely.

They go around evangelizing in my neigborhood on a regular basis.

No ski masks though.

29. Nah, we're unpopular enough, the ski masks would really over do it.
I have to say, had I ever been pelted by pool balls while proselyting, it would have been a surreal experience. I would have run like hell of course, but after about a block, the thought of a woman shouting "death from above!" while hurling 8-balls at me, would have likely caused me to roll on the ground in laughter.

15. What "burglars" is the article talking about?
From what I'm reading there were a couple fellas outside her door talking. Creepy? Sure. Worthy of calling the police? Okay. Worthy of shooting with a crossbow? Hardly.

Thank God that she didn't have a gun. These people might have simply had the wrong house, but we'll never know based on the article. If they were crims, thank God they didn't have a gun or Ben might be short one mom.

Also, if it appears that pool balls are your best offense against a perceived threat, and you have the ability to get out undetected, might be best to just flee and call the cops.

30. Weird lady. Gathering billiard balls in a bike helmet and climbing trees--
very odd reaction, a lot of effort and planning for what may not have even been a burglary situation. Why not just walk out of the house and go to a neighbor's and/or call police?
