Tom Carper should have offered a triggered public option
It probably would have passed the Finance Committee and kept the public option alive.

1. It is still alive. The finance bill is not the final bill.

5. Exactly.
There's the HELP bill for one, plus the House has to weigh in. Frustrating to try to get the correct info out there.

7. But if we're going to get the HELP bill relatively unscathed
we have to make sure the SFC bill dies in committee.

Call the Dems on the committee and tell them from here on out vote NO on the final bill.

8. No it doesn't
It can pass on the floor and still have to go to conference with the House bill.

9. Reid has said he won't include the public option in his mark up.
If he has to reconcile this piece of garbage from Baucus with the Kennedy bill, the best parts of the Kennedy bill will be left out.

We have to kill the Baucus bill now, before it ever gets to the full floor.

10. Doesn't matter. If the HOUSE passes public option
It will still have to be dealt with in conference.

And as I said in the OP - quit whining and start organizing.

11. I am organizing.
I'm organizing to get the Baucus bill killed in committee, so the Kennedy bill can get a vote on the floor without Harry Reid and Max Baucus getting their scissors into it.

13. If it is killed in committee, there will be no bill. You need a finance bill

14. You don't need a finance bill.
There's already a bill coming out of HELP. That bill is enough, and won't have the poison pills in the Baucus bill.

15. Your source, please. As far as I know, you need the finance bill for the finance part.

16. Not every bill has to pass through every committee.
The Majority Leader can bring a bill from any committee to the full floor.

2. Thanks but no thanks
Trigger is unacceptable. I'll bide my time while the public option proponents in the Senate work it out.

4. The trigger is a trojan horse, designed to actually benefit
the insurance companies, by giving them time to squash dissent and work on positive PR, bashing the government.

6. I don't think many expected the PO to come out of the finance committee.
They've danced around for weeks now and it's been clear that they wouldn't vote for it. It just needs to be voted on to get it OUT of the committee and onto the floor with the other 5. This is just wasting time and obstructing progress.

I do think the PO will pass the final bill and we will get it signed by the president.

12. A fake public option would not have kept the PO alive.
The vote actually suggests increased support for the PO among Dems on the Finance Committee, important to the fight in the Senate generally and/or in House/Senate conference.
