Skype sucks bandwidth
As some of you know, I've been having big-time internet connectivity problems with Verizon wireless out here in the Oregon wilderness all summer. Part of the problem was at the Verizon cell tower that serves me. That was finally fixed.

But I continued to have problems. Today I had an idea: What is always "on" when I am connected? Skype. I couldn't figure out how to turn Skype "off," so I un-installed it (saving the phone book and history files). Voila! I now have DSL speeds from my Verizon wireless service!

So I will not be using Skype for my last two weeks here at the lookout (I will download it and use it in Bend, when there, and then un-install before coming back out here). No big deal. I close the lookout two weeks from today.

Now that I have adequate broadband service, I'll post some great pics tomorrow of the phenomenal smoke from the Tumblebug and Boze fires.

1. My dear DemoTex!
I've never used Skype, so I was unaware of the problems...

Smart of you to figure this out!

I'm looking forward to the pics, big time!

5. Skype has its place for SOME people....but it's generally a pain in the ass.
I eagerly await the pics, also.

Welcome back :)

6. Why un-install? Why not simply close the application?
This is what I do when I don't see any of my "contacts" online.

7. I had to uninstall as well,
simply closing didn't do it. My 'puter runs much better now and I don't really miss skype so wasn't a big deal for me.

9. I use Skipe almost every day.
When not using it, there is no slow down. When I shut Skype down, it is off, like any other program that has been X'ed out of.
I monitor my Network connections and computer usages using Task Manager and when not in use, there is nothing showing in the graph under the Networking tab, even when there is a Skype icon by the clock.
When shut down, Skype is gone from the list of Processes.

Maybe you should be looking for some mal-ware on your computer instead.

An attack that penetrated the Skype instant messaging service was originally identified as a worm, but it is actually a Trojan horse, according to WebSense, the security research firm that discovered the malware. "We don't believe this new Trojan is very widespread, but this attack can cause damage," said Dan Hubbard, vice president of security research at WebSense.
