The family that prays together ...divorces more!
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 10:49 PM by The Count
A recent study by the Barna Research Group throws extreme doubt on these estimates. Barna released the results of their poll about divorce on 1999-DEC-21. 1 They had interviewed 3,854 adults from the 48 contiguous states. The margin of error is within 2 percentage points. The survey found:

11% of the adult population is currently divorced.
25% of adults have had at least one divorce during their lifetime.
Divorce rates among conservative Christians were significently higher than for other faith groups, and for Atheists and Agnostics.

12. No, that can't be it.
Especially since statistics are dynamic. Or should I start a thread about Chicago's population in 1983?

6. Oklahoma, the "buckle of the Bible Belt" has quite a high divorce rate, also higher than avg rates
of child abuse and teen pregnancy.

The study in the OP showed:
The data showed that the highest divorce rates were found in the Bible Belt. "Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Oklahoma round out the Top Five in frequency of divorce...the divorce rates in these conservative states are roughly 50 percent above the national average" of 4.2/1000 people.

11 southern states (AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, MS, NC, NM, OK, SC and TX averaged 5.1/1000 people. (LA data is not available; TX data is for 1997).
Nine states in the Northeast (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT) averaged only 3.5/1000 people.

7. Red States have higher Divorce Rates than Blue States
A couple of years ago one of the magazines
had an article which covered Divorce Rates.
Surprisingly, Red States had higher divorce
rates than Blue States.

This fall right in. The Bible Belt runs
through Red States.
Massachusets has fewer overall.

9. This is kind of old news...
There was an article I read about how conservative Evangelicals own polling showed that their members were more likely to divorce than other religious groups, enjoyed looking at porn just as much as the rest of us heathens, tended to live together before marriage more and have kids out of wedlock at the same rate. I hope that it gives them the desire to clean up their own house before telling the rest of us how to live.

But I also wish for honest politicians and world peace, and other times when I dream, I want a pony.

16. Thanks.
I'm going to name her Pancake.

Then I'll get stirrups carved out of maple and have maple stirrups on Pancake.

I was one of those divorced "fundies" .

It was a way out of an abusive marriage and a so called religion that I had only the deepest contempt for.

The only thing they succeeded at was in making me a confirmed athiest

14. I was going to add this and throw economics into the mix
People, particularly women, make less money in "red" state and, therefore, marry younger, well before they're ready, for financial reasons - and out of tradition.

Just a thought.

15. yes , and they get caught in a catch 22
The babies start coming , and they are financially dependent on an often abusive husband. No wonder they want out as quickly as possible.

I sure did.
