I realize it's a cultural thing, but cripes. It's abuse!

1. So is eating boiled lobsters
or oysters on the half shell.

or carrots, for that matter.

Where do we draw the line?

I'm serious.

How do we determine the line between living beings that are worthy of empathy and those that aren't?

3. Ask yourself how it is not, and that will tell you where you'd 'draw the line'

4. It is not insofar as carrots have no central nervous system.
They aren't sentient beings.

6. About what? Carrots not having central nervous systems?
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 10:02 PM by mycritters2
Yes, I'm sure. No sensory neurons, no brain, no NCS. Not hard to figure out.

8. You have NO idea how often we vegans hear this from people
who AREN'T being sarcastic, who want us to feel guilty about the suffering of soy beans, etc. They seem to theorize that this will make us want to eat meat, though that requires a leap of logic I've never fully understood.

So, sorry if I was dense, but it comes from my life experience.

9. Fair enough. Then ask yourself if there is a difference between killing a dog and killing a cow
...and if so, why? How about between killing a horse and killing a cow?

And if we could teach cows to fetch the newspaper, would that change anything?

10. I don't kill either one. I don't eat either one. Because,
no, I don't think there is a difference. And I live accordingly.

You?

11. It's a bit of a grey area for me
In general, sentimentality makes me think that eating a dog is 'worse' than eating a cow.

But if I was hungry enough and had no other choice? Not so sure. I might eat the dog.

12. Two end points; one black one white
with a whole lot of gray in between.

Mostly dealing with gray matter, the absence thereof, and whether or not that makes a difference.
